US F-1 student visa for Indian students

Official sources only·Last checked 29 Oct 2026

The F-1 visa is granted at a US embassy or consulate after an interview. Your I-20, the SEVIS fee receipt, your DS-160 and your proof of funds are the core of the file.

Immigration rules are moving fast in 2026: a rule to end 'duration of status' for F-1 students is blocked in court, and CPT is being policed more tightly. Read the USA edition's work-authorization page before you commit. [9]

03 Where files go wrong

Choke points to check twice

  • Booking the interview in another country to get an earlier slot: fees are not refunded and waits may be longer. [3]
  • Private social-media profiles when the State Department asks for public settings. [4]
  • Planning to rely on CPT for off-campus work: it must be required by the curriculum. [8]
