Water Polo — rules, fouls & the road to LA28
Education Margdarshan's water polo map in simple words: team size, match time, the shot clock, what counts as a foul, how exclusions and penalties work, how 12 men's and 12 women's teams reach LA28, and the Railways and CRPF jobs that recruit water polo players.
How a water polo match works
Water polo in numbers (World Aquatics) [1]
| Rule | What it says |
|---|---|
| Team | 7 in the water, one of them the goalkeeper; 7 to 14 players on the start list |
| Time | 4 periods of 8 minutes of actual play; 2-minute breaks, 5 minutes at half-time |
| Shot clock | 28 seconds to shoot; 18 seconds if your team gets the ball back after its own shot |
| Exclusion foul | Player out for 18 seconds of play, or less if a goal is scored or their team wins the ball back |
| Personal fouls | 3 and you are out for the rest of the match |
| Penalty throw | Taken from the 5 m line |
- Ordinary fouls include: touching the ball with two hands at once (only the goalkeeper may, inside the 6 m area), standing or walking on the pool floor, pushing the ball under water when tackled, hitting it with a fist, and holding or pushing off the goal or pool side.
- An attacker may not wait inside the opponent's goal area ahead of the ball.
- A free throw taken from behind the 6 m line can be shot straight at goal without delay. [1]
Olympics, Asian Games — and the cash that follows
How LA28 places are won (each of men and women) [2]
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| Host (USA) | 1 |
| World Cup Final 2027 — best team | 1 |
| World Championships Budapest 2027 — top two | 2 |
| Continental championships — best team on each of 5 continents | 5 |
| World Qualifier 2028 — top three | 3 |
- LA28 is the first Olympics with 12 women's teams, equal to the men. [2]
What your body needs — and anti-doping
- You must swim strongly and stay up in deep water for a full match — standing on the floor is a foul. World Aquatics counts age as at 31 December of the competition year. [1]
- Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

Where water polo players train
- SAI lists the Dr SPM Swimming Pool Complex, Delhi as an NCOE for swimming. Water polo needs a deep pool, goals and a team, so most players start at a swimming club or a Railways, police or services team. [6]
Low kit cost — and who pays
- Players need swimwear and a numbered cap; the pool and coach matter most. Education Margdarshan does not print fees — no governing body publishes them. [1]
Who pays [6][7]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| SAI centre trainee | Sports Authority of India | Coaching, boarding, sports science, diet |
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Railways, CRPF and other sports-quota jobs
- CRPF's 2026 sports quota had 19 water polo posts (constable and head constable, men and women) for goalkeepers, forwards, full backs and wings.
- Western Railway's 2026-27 sports quota had Level 1 water polo posts for all-rounders.
- Swimming is one of the 65 sports on the DoPT list for central sports-quota jobs (water polo is not named separately). [10][9][8]
Mistakes that cost water polo players
- Three personal fouls — out for the whole match.
- Standing on the floor or using two hands — the other team gets a free throw.
- Holding the ball too long — over 28 seconds without a shot loses the ball. [1]
Jobs and certificates — straight answers
