Merchant Navy Careers: IMU-CET & Marine Engineering
The Merchant Navy runs ships that carry cargo and passengers. Careers are in two main branches: deck (navigation) and engine (marine engineering). Training is regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping, and many degree courses are entered through the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET).
Eligibility in simple terms
For most degree programmes you need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Institutes and DG Shipping set minimum marks, an age range and medical and vision standards. As a general guide, many courses ask for around 60% in PCM and 50% in English, but you must verify the current rules in the notification.
Key points
- Education: Class 12 PCM for degree courses; other routes exist after Class 10 or diploma.
- Age: within the limit set by the institute and DG Shipping.
- Medical: DG Shipping fitness norms, including colour vision for deck roles.
- English: a minimum English score is usually required.
Step-by-step career pathway
The overall sequence is similar for deck and engine roles.
Complete Class 12 with PCM and keep your marks above the cut-off.
Apply for IMU-CET (conducted in recent years by the National Testing Agency) or the institute's own admission process.
Join an approved institute for a B.Tech in Marine Engineering, B.Sc in Nautical Science or another approved course.
Clear the DG Shipping medical.
Complete pre-sea training and a cadetship onboard a ship.
Pass competency exams to become Third Officer or Fourth/Third Engineer.
Move up the ranks through sea time and exams, from officer to Chief Engineer or Captain.
Marine engineering and nautical institutes
Only study at DG Shipping-approved institutes. The Indian Maritime University has campuses in several coastal cities, and other well-known institutes offer approved courses. Always check the approval list before you pay.
Key points
- Indian Maritime University campuses: Chennai, Mumbai Port, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Kochi.
- TS Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, and TS Rahaman, Mumbai.
- Marine Engineering and Research Institutes (MERI) in Mumbai and Kolkata.
- Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune.
- LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies, Mumbai.
Roles on a ship
Deck officers handle navigation, cargo and safety. Engine officers look after the engines and machinery. Ratings (crew) do hands-on work and can also grow with training.
Life at sea involves long contracts away from home, so consider the lifestyle carefully.
Key points
- Deck: Third Officer, Second Officer, Chief Officer, Captain.
- Engine: Fourth Engineer, Third Engineer, Second Engineer, Chief Engineer.
- Ratings: after a General Purpose Rating course approved by DG Shipping.
- Shore jobs: port, shipping company, surveying and maritime training.
Costs and funding
Fees differ widely between government and private institutes. Check what is covered (accommodation, uniform, sea time) and whether placement support is real. Avoid anyone who promises a guaranteed job.
Key points
- Ask for a written fee structure.
- Confirm DG Shipping approval.
- Check the placement record of the institute.
