Equestrian — jumping, dressage, eventing & the road to LA28
Education Margdarshan's horse-riding sport map in simple words: the three Olympic disciplines, why riders and horses must both qualify, the age limits for rider and horse, the 'minimum eligibility' results LA28 asks for, India's historic Asian Games dressage gold, the costs, and the police and service teams that ride.
Three Olympic disciplines — one horse, one rider
The Olympic equestrian disciplines [1][2][3]
| Discipline | What happens | LA28 places |
|---|---|---|
| Jumping | Clear a course of fences without knocking poles down, within the time | 75 |
| Dressage | A set test of precise movements, judged for accuracy and harmony | 60 |
| Eventing | Dressage + cross-country + jumping by the same horse and rider | 65 |
- All Olympic equestrian events are open: men and women ride against each other.
- Each country may enter one team of three or one individual per discipline.
- Places are earned by the athlete–horse combination, which must achieve the Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER) at selected FEI events — for dressage, between 1 January 2027 and 11 June 2028. [1][2]
Olympics, Asian Games — and India's medals
- At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Hriday Chheda, Anush Agarwalla, Sudipti Hajela and Divyakriit Singh won India's dressage team gold — the first equestrian gold in 41 years.
- Anush Agarwalla was picked by the Equestrian Federation of India to ride dressage at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
- Equestrian is also on the 2026 Asian Games programme. [4][5][7]
Government cash award for a senior equestrian medal (₹ lakh) [8]
| Event | Gold | Silver | Bronze |

| World Championship (every 4 years) | 40 | 25 | 15 |
| Asian Championship (every 2 years) | 7.5 | 5 | 2.5 |
In team events every squad member gets 75% of the individual amount. [8]

Where riders train
Horses are costly — who pays
- Equestrian is one of the most expensive sports: a suitable horse, its feed, vet care, transport and FEI entries, plus riding kit. The horse must also qualify together with its rider. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. [1][2]
Who pays — equestrian ladder [11]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Awards and sports-quota jobs
- Equestrian is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST); polo is listed separately.
- Medals at the Olympics or Asian Games can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions. [12]
Cost, women riders and jobs — straight answers
Do women compete separately?
No. All Olympic equestrian events are open — men and women ride in the same competition. [1]
Which government jobs can equestrian get me?
Central Group C posts under DoPT rules list equestrian among 65 sports. Police forces run their own equestrian meets and mounted units. Neither Western Railway's 2026-27 notice nor CRPF's 2026 sports quota had equestrian posts. [12][6][13][14]

CRPF fee ₹100 for UR/OBC/EWS men; free for women, SC, ST and ex-servicemen. CRPF picks sign a ₹1 lakh bond to serve at least 3 years. [13][14]
Does any 'national' certificate count for a job?
No. Railways will not recruit on a certificate from a federation MoYAS did not recognise at the time of the championship, and CRPF counts only championships of MoYAS-recognised federations or the IOA's National Games. [13][14]
