01 Core rules & selection formats

How baseball and softball work

Two teams take turns to bat and to field. The pitcher throws, the batter tries to hit and then run round the bases to home plate to score a run. Three strikes put a batter out, four balls send the batter to first base, and after three outs the teams swap. Nine players field at a time. Softball follows the same idea under its own WBSC rules. • Pitch clock (baseball): 20 seconds when no runner is on base; the batter must be in the box within 10 seconds and keep one foot in it between pitches.
  • Tied after regulation? In youth and women's baseball World Cups each extra inning starts with runners on first and second; in softball, with a runner on second. No outs in both.
  • Helmets are a must for batters and runners; U-18 and younger baseball players wear double ear-flap helmets. [1][2]

  • Doping control takes place at WBSC competitions. Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [2][6]

05 Training centres & cities

Where players train

  • Softball is one of the 27 disciplines at SAI Training Centres (STCs), which take young athletes. Baseball is not on the STC list, so players usually start with a school, club or state association. [7]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Gloves, bats, helmets — and who pays

  • You need a glove, a bat that meets WBSC rules, and a helmet; catchers need full protective gear. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1][2]

07 Earning channels & central job quotas

Sports-quota jobs

  • Baseball and Soft Ball are both on the DoPT list of 65 sports for central government sports-quota jobs.
  • The 2026 Western Railway and CRPF sports-quota notices had no baseball or softball posts — watch each new notice. [9][10][11]
08 Disqualification traps

Mistakes that cost players

  • Throwing too many pitches as a youth — WBSC sets pitch limits and rest days to protect young arms.
  • Using a bat that is not approved — WBSC events allow only bats meeting its standards.
  • Stepping out of the batter's box between pitches without a reason the rules allow — a strike is called. [1][2]
09 Real-world player doubts

Straight answers

Are baseball and softball the same sport?

They are cousins under one world body (WBSC). At LA28, men play baseball and women play softball. Softball games are 7 innings; senior men's baseball at Premier12 is 9. [3][1][2]

Will these sports help me get a government job?

Both are on the DoPT list of 65 sports, so national and international medals count for central sports-quota jobs. The 2026 Railways and CRPF notices did not have posts for them. [9][10][11]
