Needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) in Class 12 plus a qualifying National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) score.
BDS is the primary professional degree required to become a dentist in India, covering oral health, teeth, gums, jaw and dental surgery — diagnosis, treatment and increasingly, cosmetic dental procedures. It's a 5-year programme combining classroom study with hands-on clinical training treating real patients.
India has approximately 28,000 BDS seats across roughly 329 dental colleges — a far larger number of colleges than MBBS has, which is part of why the field faces a genuine paradox: a real national shortage of dentists in rural and tier-2/tier-3 areas exists alongside genuine oversaturation in metro cities. Where and how you build your career matters as much as the degree itself.
Build a strong Biology, Chemistry and Physics base for NEET-UG.
The same exam as MBBS, with separate BDS-specific counselling and cutoffs.
Classroom study alongside genuine hands-on patient treatment.
Corporate dental chain, government post, private practice, or MDS specialisation.
3-5 years of building a patient base is what drives the field's real earning growth.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Dental Anatomy |
| Year 2 | Oral Pathology, Dental Materials, Pharmacology, General Pathology |
| Year 3 | Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Community Dentistry |
| Year 4 | Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, clinical rotations |
| Internship (Year 5) | Full-time, hands-on patient treatment across dental departments |
Aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry skills — teeth whitening, aligners, veneers — are increasingly worth building on top of the core syllabus, since this segment is reported as one of the fastest-growing and highest-ROI areas of private dental practice in 2026.
The single national entrance exam for BDS — required for every government, private and deemed dental college seat in India.
Government BDS colleges are genuinely affordable: total fees for the full 5-year programme commonly range from ₹1.5-7 lakh, including annual fees of roughly ₹25,000-1,50,000. Private colleges vary considerably, with total costs commonly around ₹25-50 lakh. Here's the honest warning: management and NRI quota seats can cost ₹50 lakh to over ₹1 crore total — at typical BDS-level starting salaries, this is genuinely poor return on investment unless paired with a strong MDS specialisation from a top college or plans to practise abroad. Research the specific seat cost carefully before committing.
Real earning growth comes with practice-building time, not immediately — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.
Typical starting range at private clinics or corporate dental chains like Clove Dental — roughly ₹20,000-40,000/month.
Plus government benefits — a stable, structured route.
Varies enormously by city, skill and investment; MDS specialists reported to earn ₹25-60 lakh per annum (LPA).
MDS, via NEET-MDS, is the standard route into specialisation — Orthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics are reported among the highest-earning specialist tracks, with income brackets of ₹25-60 LPA. It isn't mandatory, though — many dentists build strong private practices, especially in cosmetic dentistry, without pursuing MDS. Some graduates instead pursue an Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Hospital Administration for a move into dental practice management or corporate dental chain leadership.
| Factor | BDS | MBBS | BAMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Oral health — teeth, gums, dental surgery | General medicine & surgery, whole-body healthcare | Ayurvedic medicine & traditional treatment |
| Total seats in India | ~28,000 across ~329 colleges | ~1,04,000 (57K govt + 47K private) | Larger seat pool, mostly government-subsidised |
| Government NEET cutoff | ~530–620+ marks | ~650–700+ marks (higher than BDS) | Generally lower than both BDS and MBBS |
| Realistic fresher salary | ₹2.5–6 LPA (employed) | ₹6–12 LPA (post-internship) | ₹3–6 LPA (varies by AYUSH sector demand) |
If your NEET score comfortably places you in a government MBBS college, MBBS is generally the stronger overall path. But if your choice is between a mediocre private MBBS and a good government or top private BDS seat, BDS from a strong institution is a legitimate, rewarding career in its own right.
Myth: BDS is just a "backup" for students who don't get MBBS.
Fact: Three real forces — the cosmetic dentistry boom, corporate dental chains, and MDS super-specialisation — have transformed BDS into a genuine standalone career with real private-practice upside, not merely a consolation prize.
Myth: Every dentist earns a modest salary like a fresher forever.
Fact: Fresher pay is genuinely modest (₹2.5-6 LPA), but established private practitioners are reported to earn ₹15-40+ LPA within 5-7 years, and MDS specialists ₹25-60 LPA — the field's real earning potential comes with practice-building time, not immediately.
Myth: Any private BDS seat is a reasonable investment given dentistry's overall demand.
Fact: Management/NRI quota seats costing ₹50 lakh to over ₹1 crore offer genuinely poor ROI at typical BDS-level starting salaries unless paired with a strong MDS specialisation or plans to practise abroad — research the specific college and seat type carefully before committing that much.
