01 Core rules & selection formats

How a breaking battle works

  • A battle is a fixed number of rounds. In each round one breaker dances a set, then the other answers with a set.
  • Team battles work the same way, with team members taking turns.
  • Battles are judged by an odd number of judges — at least 5 from 5 countries at WDSF events (7 or 9 at bigger ones).
  • No physical contact with your opponent — contact brings warnings and can lead to disqualification.
  • Big events start with a pre-selection, then a pre-qualifier, then knock-out battles. [1]

TechniqueControl and skill in your moves
VocabularyHow many different moves you show — repeating costs you
ExecutionClean moves with few or no slips, crashes or falls
MusicalityDancing with the music
OriginalityYour own ideas and style

Judges do not add up points. They move a slider between the two breakers as the battle swings, and give a final verdict at the end. [1]

02 Institutional & global recognition

Asian Games, World Games — and the cash that follows

  • Breaking is on the 2026 Asian Games programme and was in The World Games 2025. It is not in the LA28 Olympic sports list. [2][3][4]

05 Training centres & cities

Where breakers train

  • Breaking is not among SAI's NCOE or STC sports. Breakers train in dance studios, crews and open spaces; a smooth floor and music are the basic needs. [7]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Low kit cost — and who pays

  • Breaking needs little kit — comfortable clothes and shoes. The real cost is coaching and travel to battles. Education Margdarshan does not print fees — no governing body publishes them. [1]

Who pays [8]

Who pays
StagePaid byWhat you get
Elite prospectTOPS Core Group₹50,000 a month + approved training plan
Athlete in hardshipPDU National Welfare FundUp to ₹2.50 lakh
07 Earning channels & central job quotas

The honest job picture

  • Breaking is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports, and the 2026 Railways and CRPF notices had no breaking posts. Medals at the Asian Games and at WDSF World and Asian Championships earn the cash awards above. [9][10][11][5]
08 Disqualification traps

Mistakes that cost breakers

  • Touching your opponent — warnings, then possible disqualification.
  • Misbehaviour — rude gestures or acts are penalised by the judges.
  • Repeating moves — it lowers your vocabulary score.
  • Crashes and falls — they lower your execution score. [1]
09 Real-world player doubts

Straight answers

Is breaking still an Olympic sport?

Breaking is not in the LA28 Olympic sports list. It is on the 2026 Asian Games programme and in The World Games, and WDSF World and Asian Championship medals earn government cash awards. [4][2][3][5]

How do judges pick the winner if there are no points?

Each judge compares the two breakers on technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality (20% each), moving a slider towards whoever is doing better, and gives a final verdict when the battle ends. [1]
