Bachelor of Arts (BA) Geography studies both the physical world — landforms, climate, rivers and ecosystems — and the human world built on top of it — cities, population, migration and economic activity. It's a strong, often underrated choice for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and it's also one of the more practical Arts degrees, feeding directly into urban planning, Geographic Information System (GIS), environmental and disaster-management careers. This guide covers exactly what the degree involves and where it leads.

If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
BA Geography is a 3-year undergraduate degree (4 years for Honours with Research under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020) that studies the earth's physical processes — climate, landforms, rivers, soils and ecosystems — alongside human geography — population, migration, urbanisation, agriculture and economic activity. It's one of the more hands-on Arts subjects, involving fieldwork, mapwork and increasingly, GIS and remote-sensing tools alongside traditional classroom study.
It's offered widely across Indian universities. Delhi University colleges — Hindu College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce and Miranda House — are among the strong destinations, alongside Jawaharlal Nehru University's undergraduate programmes, Presidency University Kolkata, and Banaras Hindu University, under the University Grants Commission (UGC) framework.
Geography at Class 11-12 helps but isn't mandatory.
Or apply directly on merit, depending on your target university.
Physical, human and regional geography, plus cartography and fieldwork.
A GIS/remote sensing certificate, UPSC prep, a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography, or an entry-level planning/environmental role.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Geomorphology, Climatology, Geography of India, English/language elective |
| Year 2 | Human Geography, Economic Geography, Cartographic Techniques, Biogeography |
| Year 3 | Urban Geography, Environmental Geography, Regional Planning, an elective in GIS/Remote Sensing or fieldwork project |
Under the NEP 2020 Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, students at colleges like DU can exit after 1 year (Certificate), 2 years (Diploma), 3 years (Degree) or complete 4 years for an Honours with Research degree.
BA Geography is one of the most affordable degrees in India at government-funded colleges — total fees for the full 3-year course at a DU or central university college are typically in the range of ₹15,000-60,000, well below professional or private-college courses. Private and deemed universities charge considerably more, often ₹1-3 lakh per year. Merit-based, SC/ST and income-linked scholarships are available at most government institutions. Always confirm current fees directly on your target college's official admission page.
Pay depends heavily on the specific role, whether you clear a competitive exam, and whether you pursue further study or GIS certification — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.
Typical starting range in GIS support, survey assistance, environmental data or general administrative roles.
Reported for GIS analysts, urban planning assistants and environmental consultants with a relevant certification or master's degree.
IAS/IPS/IFS and similar roles, including allowances — but only after clearing UPSC or a state Public Service Commission (PSC) exam.
An MA/M.Sc in Geography — at institutions like Delhi School of Economics, JNU or Banaras Hindu University — is the natural next step for students aiming at research, teaching (via UGC-NET) or specialised planning roles. A large number of graduates instead pursue a focused certification or postgraduate diploma in GIS and Remote Sensing, or a Master's in Urban/Regional Planning, since these directly unlock higher-paying technical and planning roles.
| Factor | BA Geography | BA Political Science |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Physical world, spatial systems & human geography | Government, institutions & current governance |
| Study style | Mix of essays, mapwork & fieldwork | Primarily reading, theory & essays |
| Non-UPSC careers | GIS, urban planning, environment, disaster management | Public policy, journalism, law, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) |
| Typical admission route | CUET / merit | CUET / merit |
Both are strong, popular UPSC optional subjects. Choose Geography if you enjoy spatial thinking and want a more technically applied Arts degree; choose Political Science if you're more drawn to governance, institutions and current affairs.
Myth: BA Geography is just about memorising maps and capitals.
Fact: University-level Geography focuses on understanding physical processes, spatial analysis, human-environment interaction and increasingly, GIS tools — memorisation is a small part of it.
Myth: Geography has no real career outside teaching.
Fact: Graduates work in urban planning, GIS analysis, environmental consultancy, disaster management and civil services — often with better technical differentiation than more common Arts degrees.
Myth: You need a Science background to study Geography at university.
Fact: Most colleges offer it as a BA open to any Class 12 stream — some Science-stream students do carry over useful skills, but it's not a requirement.
