Entrance exam JEE Main for B.Tech — or BCA on Class 12 merit / CUET-UG
Any stream — no Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) or Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) needed; a real portfolio matters most.
If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
A Web Developer builds websites and web applications that run in a browser — everything from a small business landing page to a full SaaS product. The field splits into Frontend (what users see and interact with), Backend (the server, database and application logic behind it) and Full-Stack (both together).
What makes this field genuinely distinctive is how it's hired for: unlike many software roles, employers here often prioritise a visible, shippable portfolio — live URLs, deployed projects, GitHub activity — over formal credentials or heavy algorithmic interviewing. It's also one of the few tech careers with a real, well-established freelance market running alongside traditional employment.
The visual building blocks of every website.
Where most beginners plateau — push through, it's the real foundation.
React is the most in-demand choice for Indian job postings right now.
Node.js or Python, plus MySQL or MongoDB, to move toward full-stack.
Then choose: full-time job hunting, or freelancing on Upwork/Fiverr/direct clients.
| Category | Skills |
|---|---|
| Frontend | HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, TypeScript (now baseline, not a premium skill) |
| Backend | Node.js, Python, PHP, REST APIs |
| Databases | MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL |
| Full-stack / modern | Next.js, server-side rendering, AI/LLM API integration |
| Version control & deployment | Git/GitHub, Vercel/Netlify, basic cloud hosting (AWS) |
Next.js and server-side rendering expertise, design-system ownership, web performance engineering, and accessibility (WCAG/ARIA) are reported as the skills producing the largest frontend pay bumps in India in 2026.
A B.Tech in CSE commonly costs ₹2-8 lakh at government institutes and ₹5-20 lakh at private colleges (see the CSE page), while a BCA is generally more affordable at ₹30,000-1,50,000 per year (see the BCA page). What's genuinely different about web development is that it's one of the most learnable-for-free fields in tech — resources like freeCodeCamp, MDN Web Docs, and countless free YouTube courses can take you from zero to a working portfolio at no cost. Paid bootcamps, for students who want a guided, structured path, commonly cost ₹20,000-2,00,000 depending on depth and format, but they're genuinely optional here rather than necessary.
Company type and specialisation move this number significantly, and freelancing is a genuinely separate, quantifiable income path — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.
Typical starting range; strong-portfolio candidates at good companies reported to reach ₹5-10 lakh per annum (LPA).
Reported range, reaching ₹18-32 LPA at product companies and GCCs. Backend is reported to pay 10-15% more than frontend at the same level.
Highly variable — beginners often earn ₹15,000-30,000 per project, experienced freelancers with international clients ₹50,000-2,00,000 per project.
Further formal education isn't the typical growth lever here — deepening your framework skills (React, Next.js), moving from frontend-only or backend-only into full-stack, or building a specific specialisation like performance engineering, accessibility, or design systems are reported as the clearest paths to higher pay. A senior frontend developer with 10+ years can transition into a Web Architect role, designing scalable architectures for large projects; others transition fully into broader software engineering or specialise into mobile app development.
| Factor | Web Developer | Software Engineer | App Developer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Websites & web apps (frontend/backend/full-stack) | Broad software systems across platforms | Mobile apps (Android/iOS) |
| Entry barrier | Genuinely accessible — portfolio-driven, DSA-light | DSA/system-design-heavy at product companies | Platform-specific skills (Kotlin/Swift/Flutter) |
| Freelance potential | Strong, well-established freelance market | Limited, mostly full-time-role focused | Moderate, growing app-development freelance market |
| Fresher salary | ₹3–6 LPA (up to ₹5–10 LPA at strong companies) | ₹3.5–7 LPA (services) / ₹6–12 LPA (product) | ₹3.5–8 LPA reported |
These roles overlap in practice — many developers build web and mobile skills together, and "Web Developer" today often includes building the backend APIs that power a mobile app too.
Myth: You need a Computer Science degree to become a web developer.
Fact: This is one of the most genuinely accessible tech careers — self-taught developers with a strong, deployed portfolio are hired directly and freelance successfully, with or without a formal CS background.
Myth: Frontend and backend developers earn roughly the same.
Fact: Backend development is reported to pay 10-15% more than frontend at the same experience level in India in 2026, though the gap narrows significantly at senior and staff levels.
Myth: TypeScript is a nice-to-have skill that sets you apart.
Fact: TypeScript proficiency is now considered a baseline expectation rather than a premium differentiator for frontend roles at most companies in 2026 — plain JavaScript alone increasingly limits your options.
