01 Core rules & selection formats

How rugby sevens is played

Rugby sevens is the short, fast form of rugby: seven players a side run with an oval ball and pass it to cross the opponents' line and ground the ball for a try. A successful kick after a try is a conversion. Each Olympic squad has 12 players. [1][4]

  • World Rugby publishes the full laws and the special sevens variations on its official laws site.
  • Players must meet World Rugby's Regulation 8 (eligibility to play for a country) and its player-welfare guidelines. [2][1]

09 Real-world player doubts

Olympics, jobs and certificates — straight answers

Can India reach the Olympics in rugby sevens?

The route exists: Asia gets one men's place through the 2027 Asia regional championship, plus an Asian spot in the 8-team Final Olympic Repechage. India's teams already play Asia Rugby events. [1][5]

Which government jobs can rugby get me?

Central Group C posts under DoPT rules list rugby among 65 sports, and Khelo India medals count. Neither Western Railway's 2026-27 notice nor CRPF's 2026 sports quota had rugby posts. [12][13][14][15]
