Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) sets ten levels, from certificates to doctorates. Universities offer 3-year bachelor's (4 for honours or engineering), and the Group of Eight (Go8) are the research leaders. Applications go to each university or through state centres such as UAC (NSW/ACT) and VTAC (Victoria). Intakes are February/March and July.

Post-study work: Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)

  • The 485 visa length depends on the qualification, and it is usually 2 to 4 years; recent updates have changed some rules and age limits.
  • You must apply within a set period after finishing your course and meet English and health requirements.
  • Work rights during study are capped per fortnight in term time; check the current limit.

Australia has two main intakes: February and July. Choose the course, the university and a study plan that you can explain clearly in your visa application.

Check requirements

Look at the academic entry marks, English requirement and any prerequisites. Some courses need a portfolio or interview.

38 to 10 months before

Take English tests

IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo are accepted at many universities. Confirm which tests the university and the visa accept.

Apply to the university

Applications go to the university or its approved agent. Upload transcripts, English results, ID and a statement of purpose.

5After the offer

Accept and pay the deposit

Accept the offer and pay the tuition deposit. You then receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

6After the CoE

Arrange OSHC

Overseas Student Health Cover is compulsory for the visa. Buy it for the whole duration of your visa.

Apply for the student visa

Apply for subclass 500 online, with funds, genuine-student statement, health checks and biometrics as required.
