How an amateur MMA bout works

Mixed martial arts mixes striking, kicking and grappling in one bout. Amateur MMA is the safer, first step of the sport, and its rules ban the most dangerous blows. [1]

  • A bout is 3 rounds of 3 minutes with a 1-minute rest between rounds.
  • Three judges score each round on the 10-point must system. First they look at effective striking and grappling; only if that is level, at effective aggression; and only if everything is even, at control of the area.
  • You win by submission (a physical or verbal tap-out), TKO (the referee stops it, or stops it on the doctor's advice), a decision on the scorecards, or disqualification.
  • In a tournament there are no draws: a level bout goes to a fourth, overtime round. [1]

  • Under IMMAF rules the fighting area is a padded cage or ring, 20 to 32 feet across, with at least 40 mm of high-density foam under a vinyl cover.
  • The Asian Games format is different: AMMA/FIMMA rules use no cage or ring — bouts take place on an open field of play. [1][3]
02 Institutional & global recognition

MMA's first Asian Games

  • The Olympic Council of Asia added MMA to the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. It ran 20–22 September 2026 at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center: 55 athletes from 21 countries and regions, six gold medals.
  • The Asian Games competition was run by the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA), the Asian arm of FIMMA. [5][4][3]

MMA has no other event on the Ministry's cash-award list — World or Asian MMA championship medals and professional titles earn nothing under the scheme. [7]

03 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Weigh-in, medical checks and anti-doping

  • Amateurs weigh in on the day of competition, and again on every later day you progress in a tournament.
  • All pre-competition medical examinations and tests are compulsory. After every bout a doctor examines you; refusing that exam means an immediate suspension while it is investigated.
  • A fouled fighter gets up to 5 minutes to recover. [1]
  • The rules prohibit putting any foreign substance on the head or body to gain an advantage. [1]
  • In India you must be available for testing, check every medicine against the Prohibited List, and apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [8]
  • Weight-cutting pills and fat-burners are a doping risk: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — you are responsible for anything found in your sample. [9]

MouthpieceYour own, well fitting and non-branded; a round will not start without it
Groin protectorCompulsory for men, optional for women
Hand wrapsSoft gauze and tape only, put on in the dressing room and checked
  • Your real costs are gym fees, sparring kit for training and travel to bouts. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]

Who pays [11]

Who pays
StagePaid byWhat you get
Elite prospectTOPS Core Group₹50,000 a month + approved training plan
Athlete in hardshipPDU National Welfare FundUp to ₹2.50 lakh
07 Earning channels & central job quotas

The honest job picture

  • MMA is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports for central Group C sports-quota posts, and the 2026 Western Railway and CRPF notices had no MMA posts.
  • An Asian Games medal earns the government cash award (₹30 / 20 / 10 lakh). Fighters who also compete in wrestling, boxing or judo can use those sports' quota routes. [12][13][14][7]
08 Disqualification traps

Fouls that cost points — or the bout

  • Fouls include: head-butts, eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, spiking an opponent onto the head or neck, strikes to the spine or back of the head, throat strikes, groin attacks, kicking or kneeing the head of a grounded opponent, stomping, and small-joint (finger or toe) locks.
  • Holding the fence or the opponent's gloves, shorts, shin guards or rash guard brings a warning first.
  • Timidity — avoiding contact, spitting out the mouthpiece again and again, or faking an injury — is a foul.
  • Points are deducted for fouls; disqualification can follow a run of fouls or one flagrant foul. If you injure the opponent with an intentional foul and the bout stops, you lose by disqualification. [1]
09 Real-world player doubts

Straight answers

Is amateur MMA the same as what I see on TV?

No. Amateur rules ban elbows, knees to the head, heel hooks and neck cranks, rounds are 3 minutes, and shin guards and organiser-supplied 6–8 oz gloves are compulsory. At the Asian Games there was no cage at all — AMMA uses an open field of play. [1][3]

Can MMA get me a government job or a cash award?

Only an Asian Games medal earns a government cash award. MMA is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports, and the 2026 Railways and CRPF sports-quota notices had no MMA posts. [7][12][13][14]
