01 Overview & governing authority

A merit list, not an exam, for 2026-27

Polytechnic admission in West Bengal is run by the West Bengal State Council of Technical and Vocational Education and Skill Development (Technical Education Division), a statutory body under West Bengal Act XXVI of 2013 and the successor of the West Bengal State Council of Technical Education. The Council prepares merit lists for diploma admission either through entrance tests such as JEXPO (first year) and VOCLET (second year) or on the marks of the qualifying exam. [1]

For the 2026-27 session the first-year brochure says admission to the Diploma in Engineering & Technology in all polytechnics is made on a merit list prepared from the marks obtained in the qualifying examination, followed by online counselling. The second-year (lateral entry) brochure follows the same rule. [1]

02 Academic eligibility

Madhyamik with Science and Maths for year one — Class 12 or ITI for year two

  • First year (3-year diploma): passed or appearing Madhyamik / Class 10 or an equivalent board exam with Science or Physical Science and Mathematics.
  • Age: date of birth on or before 1 July 2011; no upper age limit.
  • Citizenship: Indian citizens only. A West Bengal domicile certificate (Proforma A, B or C — 10 years' continuous residence as on 31 Dec 2025) must be produced at admission.
  • The first-year brochure sets no minimum percentage; rank comes from the merit list.
  • Medical: no colour blindness, physically and mentally fit — a registered doctor's certificate is needed at admission. [1]
  • Second year by lateral entry (2-year diploma, no age limit): passed or appearing Higher Secondary / 10+2 with the subjects in AICTE table 8.4, or Higher Secondary (Vocational) of WBSCTVESD, or passed 10th + 2-year ITI (continuous).
  • Lateral-entry subjects depend on the branch: Civil and Chemical need Physics, Chemistry and Maths; Computer, IT, Electrical and Electronics branches need Physics and Maths plus one of Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, IT, Biology, Informatics Practices, Biotechnology, a technical vocational subject, Agriculture, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies or Entrepreneurship.
  • Candidates still appearing in ITI are not eligible for lateral entry. [2]
03 Exam scheme & marking matrix

No paper to sit: your qualifying-exam marks set your rank

  • There is no JEXPO question paper, mode or marking scheme for 2026-27: the Council ranks every applicant on the marks of the eligibility examination (Madhyamik / Class 10 for first year).
  • Allotment then runs through online counselling on the Common Admission Portal: take admission within the date on the allotment letter, or the seat goes to the next eligible candidate.
  • A merit rank and an allotted seat do not guarantee admission — eligibility documents are checked physically at the institute, and any mismatch with the application cancels the candidature.
  • The brochure lists 45 first-year disciplines, from Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Science & Technology to Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Forensics, Electric Vehicle Technology, Renewable Energy and Photography. [1]

Websites still describing a JEXPO OMR or CBT test, its syllabus or a sectional Maths / Science split are out of date for 2026-27. [1]
