05 Reservation & certificates

Horizontal quotas and the new OBC list

  • Constable vacancies carry horizontal quotas inside each category: Exempted Category (land losers' families, ex-census employees, election workers), NVF & Home Guards, ex-servicemen, Civic / Village Police Volunteers and sports quota. Unfilled horizontal seats go to other candidates of the same category.
  • EWS candidates need an Income and Asset Certificate valid for 2023-24 or later; certificates from other states are not accepted.
  • OBC certificates must name OBC-A or OBC-B (as per the 2024 rules) and be issued within the year before 1 Jan 2024, or be revalidated.
  • Hill-area candidates (Darjeeling, Kalimpong) must produce domicile certificates; Gorkhas, Garhwalis and Rajbanshis need a community certificate to claim relaxed physical standards. [1]

On 18 May 2026 the Backward Classes Welfare Department withdrew all its 2025 OBC notifications and notified a State List of 66 OBC classes with 7% reservation in state services, following the Calcutta High Court judgment of 22 May 2024. WBPRB says OBC certificates naming any class outside this list are invalid and such candidates are treated as Unreserved; candidates dropped from the list who hold a valid EWS certificate can be treated as EWS. [7]

No pay level, rupee figure or in-hand salary is printed in the 2024 recruitment documents, so none is shown here.

08 Job profile & posting

Verification, medical, then appointment

Provisionally selected constables fill in a verification roll for a character and antecedents check and are sent for a medical examination before appointment. [1]

Sub-Inspector candidates choose between the Unarmed and Armed Branch in order of preference in the application, and that choice is final. [9]
