01 Core rules & selection formats

Swim, bike, run — the distances and the rules that decide races

A triathlon is one race in three parts: swim, then bike, then run, with the clock running through the transitions between them. Duathlon (run–bike–run) and relays follow the same rule book. [1]

Race distances (World Triathlon) [1]

Race distances (World Triathlon)

Super sprint250–500 m6.5–13 km1.7–3.5 km15
Sprint750 m20 km5 km16
Standard (Olympic)1,500 m40 km10 km18
Long1.9–3 km80–90 km20–21.9 km18
  • Drafting (riding close behind another cyclist) is legal in elite, U23, junior and youth races and the mixed relay, but illegal in most age-group standard, middle and long races and in para triathlon.
  • Water temperature decides wetsuits: they can be mandatory in cold water and forbidden in warm water.
  • Penalties are served as time: for drafting, 30 s (sprint) to 1 min (standard) up to 3 min (long); for other offences 5 s to 1 min. [1]

05 Training centres & cities

Where triathletes train

  • Triathlon is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or SAI Training Centres. Triathletes combine swimming pools, cycling roads and running tracks — SAI centres for swimming, cycling and athletics are useful bases for the separate skills. [7]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Bike, wetsuit, entries — and who pays

  • Costs come from a race bike that meets the rules for your category (draft-legal races have stricter wheel and handlebar rules), a wetsuit, running shoes and race entries. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]

07 Earning channels & central job quotas

Awards and sports-quota jobs

  • Triathlon is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
  • Medals at the Olympics or Asian Games can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions. [9]
08 Disqualification traps

Mistakes that cost triathletes

  • Drafting in a draft-illegal race — a time penalty of up to 3 minutes.
  • Wrong wetsuit call — wearing one when forbidden, or missing one when mandatory.
  • A bike that breaks the equipment rules for your category (wheels, handlebars). [1]
09 Real-world player doubts

Starting, Olympics and jobs — straight answers

I am a swimmer or runner. Can I switch to triathlon?

Yes — triathlon combines both. Youth races start at 15 with super sprints and juniors race sprints (750 m · 20 km · 5 km); the Olympic distance is 1.5 km · 40 km · 10 km and needs you to be 18. [1]

Which government jobs can triathlon get me?

Central Group C posts under DoPT rules list triathlon among 65 sports. Neither Western Railway's 2026-27 notice nor CRPF's 2026 sports quota had triathlon posts. [9][10][11]

Does any 'national' certificate count for a job?

No. Railways will not recruit on a certificate from a federation MoYAS did not recognise at the time of the championship, and CRPF counts only championships of MoYAS-recognised federations or the IOA's National Games. [10][11]
