UCAS and Honours degrees

UK undergraduate degrees are specialised from day one: you apply to one subject, not a general programme. Bachelor's Honours degrees take 3 years (4 in Scotland, or with a placement year in England). Applications go through UCAS with a personal statement; most master's degrees are 1 year.

1Pathway

Foundation / International Year One

1 year pathway for students whose Class 12 board marks are not enough for direct entry. Guarantees progression to a partner university.

2Pathway

Bachelor's Honours (BA / BSc / BEng / LLB)

3 years (4 in Scotland, +1 for sandwich year). UCAS: up to 5 choices, 15 January main deadline; Oxford, Cambridge and medicine/dentistry/vet close 15 October.

3Pathway

Integrated master's (MEng / MSci)

4-year integrated route in engineering and sciences; common for chartership (IMechE, IET).

4Pathway

Master's (MSc / MA / MBA / LLM)

1 year taught. Apply directly to the university, rolling or deadlined; no UCAS.

5Pathway

PhD

3–4 years; apply directly with a research proposal and supervisor.

Career tracks and licensing in United Kingdom

Each track shows the full chain: degree, entrance or licensing exam, regulator and work route.

UK Medicine (UCAT → MBBS → NHS Foundation Programme)

Regulator: GMC (General Medical Council) / UKFPO

UK medicine is a 5–6 year undergraduate degree, but international places are tightly capped (about 7.5% of seats) and fees are very high. BMAT was retired after 2023; most schools now use UCAT.

StageWhat happens
1. Class 12 science with top marksBiology and chemistry are essential. Most schools expect very high grades in Class 12 boards or A-levels (A*AA equivalent).
2. UCATBook for July–September in the year of application. Cognitive subtests score 300–900 each plus a Situational Judgement band. BMAT is no longer offered.
3. UCAS by 15 OctoberUp to 4 medicine choices. Universities weigh UCAT, grades and interviews (MMI). Check each school's international policy.
4. MBBS / MBChB (5–6 yrs)Clinical teaching from the early years; some courses include an intercalated year.
5. Foundation Programme (2 yrs)Provisional GMC registration at graduation, then FY1 and FY2 via UKFPO. International graduates are lower priority in allocation.
6. Specialty trainingApply for core or specialty training. Work route: Skilled Worker visa (Health and Care) after graduation.

UK Law (LL.B → SQE Exams → Solicitor / Barrister)

Regulator: SRA (solicitors) / Bar Standards Board (barristers)

Since 2021 solicitors qualify through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), not the old LPC. A law degree is not mandatory: any degree plus SQE works. Indian LLB holders can sit the SQE but UK practice also needs 2 years of qualifying work experience.

StageWhat happens
1. LL.B (3 yrs) or any degree + conversionLLB via UCAS. LNAT is required by several universities (Oxford, UCL, King's, Durham and others).
2. SQE1Two 180-question multiple-choice papers on functioning legal knowledge.
3. SQE2Practical oral and written skills assessments.
4. Qualifying Work Experience (2 yrs)Can be done at up to four employers, including law clinics and placements.
5. Character and suitabilitySRA admission as a solicitor. Barristers instead follow the BSB route: Bar course, exams and pupillage.

UK Finance & Accounting (ACA / ACCA → Big 4)

Regulator: ICAEW (ACA) / ACCA

UK finance trainees often join a Big 4 firm after a degree and study for ACA while working, with exam support. Indian students can also start ACCA from home and combine it with a UK degree.

StageWhat happens
1. Degree (Accounting/Finance/any)Accounting degrees may give exemptions from some ACA/ACCA papers.
2. Graduate schemeApply to Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG graduate programmes in the autumn of final year.
3. ACA with ICAEWCertificate level, professional level and advanced level plus 3 years of practical experience.
4. ACCA alternative13 exams across Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional plus 36 months of experience.
5. Chartered statusBecomes ACA/ACCA qualified; routes into audit, tax, advisory and finance leadership.

CPR pathway

Step by step

  • Complete UK degree and apply for the Graduate visa before the student visa expires.
  • Secure a sponsored Skilled Worker role meeting salary/skill thresholds.
  • Accrue continuous residence; apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
  • Note: *Graduate Route duration and settlement rules are being reformed; check gov.uk before applying.

Post-study work: Graduate Route

  • The Graduate Route is currently 2 years after a bachelor's or master's degree and 3 years after a PhD.
  • You must apply from inside the UK, while your Student visa is still valid, and after your university has told the Home Office you completed the course.
  • The UK government has announced plans to shorten the Graduate Route for new applications in the coming years, so check gov.uk for the exact rule for your intake.
  • Longer-term work usually moves to a Skilled Worker visa, which needs a job from a licensed sponsor and a minimum salary or skill level.
  • While studying, Student visa holders can normally work part-time up to a weekly limit set in their visa conditions.

Proof of money: Show tuition for the first year plus the monthly maintenance amount set by UKVI, held for the required period. Immigration rules change often; confirm on the official site.

Application timeline for United Kingdom

Work backwards from your intake. September is the main intake; January and May intakes exist for some master's programmes.

115 to 18 months before

Choose course and universities

In the UK you apply for a specific course, not a general degree. Pick one subject and shortlist up to five universities for UCAS.

212 months before

Check entry requirements

Look at the required Class 12 marks and subjects. Some courses ask for specific subjects or an admissions test, such as for medicine or Oxford and Cambridge.

39 to 12 months before

Take English tests

IELTS Academic is the most common. If you need a visa, check whether the university needs a test approved for UK visas.

46 to 9 months before

Write the personal statement

Explain why you want the course and show proof of interest: projects, reading, competitions and work experience. Ask a teacher for a reference.

5By the deadline

Apply through UCAS or directly

UCAS deadlines for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine come earlier than for other courses. Most master's applications go directly to the university.

6Offer stage

Receive offers and accept

Offers can be conditional on exam results or unconditional. Choose a firm choice and an insurance choice in UCAS, or accept directly.

7After accepting

Get the CAS and apply for the Student visa

The university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, and give biometrics.

8Before departure

Plan housing and travel

Apply for university accommodation early because it fills fast. Arrange insurance, forex and travel.

Tests you may need: IELTS (Academic) or other approved English tests; GRE/GMAT only for some programmes; undergraduate applications go through UCAS.

Language requirement

English test cut-offs

TestTypical requirement
IELTS (Academic)6.0-7.0 overall (IELTS for UKVI where the university needs it)
TOEFL iBT80-100 iBT at many universities
Duolingo English TestAccepted by many universities for admission, but check; it is not a UKVI-approved test for the visa itself

UK visa English rules differ from university admission rules. Confirm with the sponsoring university.
