01 Core rules & selection formats

One athlete, many sports, one day

Modern pentathlon tests one athlete across several sports. At LA28 it has four parts: fencing, swimming, a head-to-head sprint obstacle race (inspired by the TV show Ninja Warrior, replacing horse riding) and the laser run, which mixes running and laser-pistol shooting. UIPM also keeps an Olympic pentathlon fencing world ranking. [1][2]

The IOC Session that confirmed modern pentathlon for LA28 was held in Mumbai in October 2023. [1]

03 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Eligibility and anti-doping

  • Athletes must meet the Olympic Charter and UIPM rules and take part in the qualification events listed in the UIPM LA28 system. [2]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

Where pentathletes train

  • Modern pentathlon is not among SAI's NCOE or STC sports; athletes combine SAI swimming, athletics, fencing and shooting facilities and their federation's camps. [6]

Many sports, many kits — and who pays

  • Pentathletes need fencing kit, swimming gear, a laser pistol and running shoes, plus travel to UIPM events. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [2]

The honest job picture

  • Modern pentathlon is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports for central sports-quota jobs, and the 2026 Railways and CRPF notices had no pentathlon posts. The rewards are the cash awards above. [8][9][10][4]

  • Missing the 2027 Asian Championships — it is Asia's main LA28 route (top 5, one per country). [2]

Straight answers

I am a good swimmer and runner. Should I try modern pentathlon?

It can suit all-rounders: Asia has 5 LA28 places through the 2027 Asian Championships, with at most one per country — a realistic door for a country building the sport. You will also need fencing and laser shooting. [2]

Does modern pentathlon count for government jobs?

Not through the central sports quota today — it is not on the DoPT list. Medals earn cash awards. [8][4]
