Admission State / institute entrance or Class 12 PCB merit — NEET generally not required
Needs PCB; NEET is generally not required.
If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
BPT is a professional degree focused on physical rehabilitation — helping patients recover movement and function after injuries, surgeries, paralysis, sports injuries and physical disabilities, using exercise therapy, manual therapy and electrotherapy.
India's demographic trends genuinely favour this field: an ageing population, rising chronic disease, and growing awareness of sports injury management and rehabilitation are all real, ongoing drivers of demand. What's genuinely worth understanding honestly before enrolling: physiotherapy in India has historically lacked the kind of single, long-established national regulatory council that Nursing (Indian Nursing Council) or Pharmacy (Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)) have had for decades. The NCAHP Act 2021 is progressively closing this gap, with a national physiotherapy register expected to be operational by 2026-27.
Biology is compulsory; build a genuine interest in human movement and rehabilitation.
Verify your specific state's process — usually no NEET needed.
Classroom study alongside genuine hands-on patient rehabilitation training.
Where operational, or maintain a valid degree certificate as required.
Hospital/clinic employment, sports team, own practice, or international licensing.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics, Basic Biochemistry |
| Year 2 | Pathology, Pharmacology, Exercise Therapy fundamentals, Electrotherapy |
| Year 3 | Orthopaedics, Neurology, Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy, Community Medicine |
| Year 4 | Sports Physiotherapy, Paediatric Physiotherapy, clinical rotations, research methodology |
| Internship | Hands-on rehabilitation practice across hospital departments (typically 6 months to 1 year) |
Combining physiotherapy knowledge with adjacent skills — sports science, ergonomics, or even basic data/research literacy — is reported to give graduates a genuine edge, both domestically and when pursuing international licensing routes.
Government BPT colleges are reported to charge as little as ₹20,000 per year, meaning a full 4.5-year total in the range of roughly ₹1-1.5 lakh — genuinely one of the more affordable medical-adjacent degrees available. Private colleges start from around ₹1.2 lakh per year and go considerably higher, with total 4.5-year costs commonly in the ₹6-15 lakh range depending on the institute. Always confirm current fees directly on your target college's official admission page.
These are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees — specialisation and location change the picture significantly.
Roughly ₹15,000-40,000/month — small clinics at the lower end, metro-city hospitals higher.
Reported range as physiotherapists build reputation and take on more independent responsibility.
Internationally licensed physiotherapists in the UK, US, Australia or Canada are reported to earn considerably more.
MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) is a 2-year postgraduate specialisation — Orthopaedics, Neurology, Sports and Paediatric physiotherapy among the common tracks — reported to open higher-paying specialist and academic roles. For students aiming abroad, UK (HCPC registration), US (NPTE plus state licensure), Australia (AHPRA registration), Canada, and Gulf countries (DHA/MOH/HAAD registration) all offer established, well-documented licensing pathways, with those markets facing reported ongoing physiotherapist shortages.
| Factor | BPT | Nursing | Occupational Therapy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Restoring movement & physical function through exercise/manual therapy | Direct patient care, medication administration, holistic nursing support | Helping patients perform daily living activities & regain independence |
| Admission route | State CET / direct PCB merit, NEET generally not required | State CET / direct merit, NEET generally not required | State CET / direct merit, NEET generally not required |
| National regulation | Maturing — NCAHP Act 2021 implementation ongoing | Established — Indian Nursing Council (INC), long-standing | Maturing — NCAHP Act 2021 implementation ongoing |
| Realistic fresher salary | ₹2.5–4.5 LPA | ₹2–4 LPA (govt higher), strong international demand | ₹2.5–4.5 LPA, similar international scope to BPT |
All three are genuine, hands-on patient-care careers with comparatively accessible admission — the right choice comes down to whether you're drawn to physical rehabilitation (BPT), holistic patient care (Nursing), or daily-living skills recovery (Occupational Therapy).
Myth: You need NEET to become a physiotherapist.
Fact: Unlike MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS, BPT admission is generally through state-level CET or direct Class 12 PCB merit — NEET is not required at most colleges, though a few programmes vary by state, so always verify locally.
Myth: Physiotherapy has the same strong national regulatory framework as nursing or pharmacy.
Fact: Physiotherapy in India has historically lacked a single unified national council the way Nursing (INC) or Pharmacy (PCI) have; the NCAHP Act 2021 is progressively building this framework, with a national physiotherapy register expected operational by 2026-27 — genuinely worth understanding as you plan your registration and practice.
Myth: Physiotherapy salaries in India are uniformly low with no real upside.
Fact: While Indian fresher salaries are genuinely modest, BPT has one of the strongest, most well-documented international licensing pathways among Indian allied-health degrees, with the UK, US, Australia, Canada and Gulf countries all facing physiotherapist shortages and offering meaningfully higher pay after registration.
