01 Core rules & selection formats

How golf is played and scored

The basic idea of golf is to play the course as you find it and play the ball as it lies — you hit the ball from the tee into each hole in as few strokes as possible. [1]

Two ways to play [2][5]

Two ways to play
FormHow you win
Stroke playLowest total number of strokes for the round(s) — used at the Olympics
Match playYou play against one opponent hole by hole; win more holes than they do
  • You may not start a round with more than 14 clubs. Breaking this costs 2 penalty strokes per hole in stroke play (maximum 4).
  • A ball is lost if not found within 3 minutes of starting to search. A lost or out-of-bounds ball means stroke-and-distance relief: one penalty stroke and play again from where you last hit.
  • The standard penalty for most breaches is the general penalty: two strokes in stroke play, loss of the hole in match play. [3][4][1]

09 Real-world player doubts

Cost, Olympics and jobs — straight answers

How do I reach the Olympics in golf?

Only through the Olympic Golf Ranking, which uses world-ranking events over two years: 59 places per gender by ranking plus the host, with each continent guaranteed one. Up to 4 per country if all are in the top 15. LA28 also adds a mixed team event. [5]

Which government jobs can golf get me?

Central Group C posts under DoPT rules list golf among 65 sports. Neither Western Railway's 2026-27 notice nor CRPF's 2026 sports quota had golf posts. [12][13][14]
