Sport Climbing — boulder, lead, speed & the road to LA28
Education Margdarshan's climbing map in simple words: the three climbing disciplines — boulder, lead and speed — which become three separate Olympic events at LA28, the licence and age rules, how places are won (including an Asia qualifier for each), India's youth speed record, the cash awards and the honest picture on jobs.
Three ways to climb a wall
The climbing disciplines (all three are separate LA28 events) [1][2][3]
| Discipline | What you do | LA28 places |
|---|---|---|
| Boulder | Short, hard problems on low walls without a rope, over mats | 12 men · 12 women |
| Lead | Climb as high as you can on a tall wall, clipping the rope as you go | 12 men · 12 women |
| Speed | Race up a standard route against the clock | 14 men · 14 women |
- Each country may send at most 2 climbers per gender per event. [1]
Olympics, Asian Games — and India's climbers
How LA28 places are won (lead shown; boulder and speed are similar) [1]
| Route | Places per gender |
|---|---|
| Continental multi-sport Games 2027 (European Games, Pan American Games) | 1 each |
| World Climbing Championship 2027 | 3 |
| Continental qualifiers (Sep–Dec 2027) — incl. a World Climbing Asia Qualifier | 1 per continent |
| Olympic Q-Series 2028 (Tokyo, Shanghai) | 4 |
| Host and universality | 1 + 1 |
- Climbing is also on the 2026 Asian Games programme, and speed climbing at the World Games.
- At the Youth Asian Climbing Championship in Jamshedpur, Joga Purty won silver in women's U18 speed and broke the national record with 8.89 seconds. [5][6][4]
Government cash award for a senior climbing medal (₹ lakh) [7]
| Event | Gold | Silver | Bronze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Olympic Games | 75 | 50 | 30 |
| Asian Games | 30 | 20 | 10 |
| World Climbing Championship (every 2 years) | 20 | 14 | 8 |
| Asian Championship (every 2 years) | 7.5 | 5 | 2.5 |
Licence, age and anti-doping
- For LA28 you must be born before 1 January 2012, hold a valid World Climbing international licence for 2028, and not be banned from World Climbing competitions that year. [1]
- Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [8]

Shoes, harness, wall fees — and who pays
- Climbers need shoes, a harness (lead), chalk and access to a wall. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]
Who pays — climbing ladder [10]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Khelo India athlete | Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports | ₹6.28 lakh a year incl. ₹1.20 lakh cash |
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Awards — and the honest job picture
Mistakes that cost climbers
- No World Climbing licence for the Olympic year — not eligible.
- A ban from any World Climbing competition that year — not eligible.
- Skipping the Asia Qualifier — it is the most direct continental route. [1]
Disciplines, jobs and certificates — straight answers
Do I have to be good at all three — boulder, lead and speed?
Not any more. At LA28 boulder, lead and speed are separate events, each with its own qualification, so you can specialise. [1][2][3]
Can climbing get me a government job?
Not through the central sports quota today — climbing is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports, and the 2026 Railways and CRPF notices had no climbing posts. Medals still bring government cash awards. [11][12][13][7]
