Entrance exams

Maharashtra entrance exams, explained

What each exam is for, who can take it, how it works and how you get selected.

MHT-CET

Who can apply

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for engineering (PCM) or Physics, Chemistry and Biology for pharmacy and agriculture (PCB).

Pattern

A computer-based test conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, with separate PCM and PCB groups. Scores are reported as percentiles after normalisation across sessions.

How selection works

Merit is based on MHT-CET percentile, and CAP rounds use it for seat allotment.

Tip

Take sessions seriously because percentiles depend on relative performance.

NEET-UG (for medical)

Who can apply

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Pattern

A national multiple-choice exam.

How selection works

The State CET Cell conducts state-quota counselling; many MBBS seats are reserved for Maharashtra candidates.

Tip

Prepare domicile documents early.

Other CETs

Who can apply

Depends on the course.

Pattern

The CET Cell also conducts tests for law, B.Ed, management, architecture and other courses.

How selection works

Each test has its own merit list and counselling.

Tip

Check the CET Cell calendar for your course.

Domicile rules and reservation quotas

State quota highlights

  • Engineering and pharmacy seats are split into Home University (HU), Other than Home University (OHU) and state-level seats, so where you studied Class 12 affects which seats you can claim.
  • Maharashtra-domicile and Maharashtra-State-candidate rules, plus category reservations and EWS, are laid out in the CAP brochure.
  • Minority and institutional quota seats in private colleges follow separate rules, so read the college-wise seat matrix.
Admission process

State counselling portal: step by step

Authority: State CET Cell and DTE Maharashtra (CAP rounds); medical via State CET Cell. Engineering and pharmacy counselling are run through CAP rounds on the DTE and State CET Cell portals; medical counselling is run by the State CET Cell.

1Step

Check the dates: the state authority publishes a schedule for registration, document verification, choice filling and each round.

2Step

Register on the official counselling portal with your exam roll number, mobile number and email, and pay the registration fee if asked.

3Step

Upload or present documents: mark sheets, entrance score card, domicile, category and income certificates, photo ID and passport photographs.

4Step

Fill your college and course choices in order of preference. Add more choices than you think you need; the system allots the first available choice on your list.

5Step

Check the provisional allotment result when it is published, then accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee or reporting to the college as instructed.

6Step

Choose whether to freeze the seat or float for a better option in the next round, if the state allows it.

7Step

Report to the allotted college with original documents, pay the fees and complete admission before the last date, because a missed deadline can cancel your seat.

Medical route: NEET-UG score, then State CET Cell counselling for the state quota, alongside MCC counselling.

Diploma

Polytechnic and diploma options

Maharashtra diploma admission uses Class 10 marks through a CAP process run by the Directorate of Technical Education, and the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) sets the syllabus and conducts exams. Diploma holders can often take direct second-year admission to B.Tech. Confirm the details in the current DTE brochure.
