Eligibility

When and how to choose Science

Science is chosen right after Class 10 — your combination decides which doors stay open at Class 12.

After Class 10

  • Choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) for engineering, defence and technology careers.
  • Choose PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) for medicine, biotechnology and healthcare careers.
  • PCMB keeps both engineering and medical entrance exams open, with a heavier workload.

After Class 12

  • PCM students sit JEE Main/Advanced or state CETs for engineering; PCB students sit National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical degrees.
  • Computer-focused degrees like Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and most emerging-tech careers admit via Common University Entrance Test (CUET) or merit, often open to any stream.
  • Defence entry via National Defence Academy (NDA) requires PCM at Class 12 for technical branches, alongside a written exam and Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.

Your roadmap

A typical Science journey

  1. Class 11–12

Study Physics, Chemistry and either Maths (PCM), Biology (PCB), or both (PCMB).

  2. Pick a direction

    Engineering (JEE/CET), Medical (NEET), or a computing/emerging-tech degree (CUET/merit).

  3. Clear the entrance exam

Or, for many tech and life-science degrees, get admitted directly on merit.

  4. Specialise

Move into a core branch, a research career, or a fast-growing emerging field like AI or biotech.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

There is no single best option. PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) is built for engineering, defence and technology careers. PCB is built for medicine, biotechnology and healthcare. PCMB keeps both engineering and medical entrance exams open, at the cost of a heavier Class 11-12 workload.
Most medical degrees like MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) require Biology, so a pure PCM student cannot sit NEET directly. However, PCM keeps healthcare-technology careers open — biomedical and related engineering fields, health-tech startups, and medical equipment roles — without needing NEET.
Yes. Biotechnology, bioinformatics, genetics, microbiology and several healthcare-technology and research careers are open to PCB students, and many later add programming or data-analysis skills on top of their core biology background.
No. Medicine and most life-science careers do not require advanced Mathematics beyond Class 10 level. It is compulsory for engineering, defence entrance exams like NDA, and most computer-science and data-focused careers.
Artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, biotechnology, healthcare technology and renewable energy are widely reported as fast-growing fields, alongside evergreen demand in core engineering, medicine and government scientific research roles like ISRO and DRDO.
