Entrance exam JEE Main JEE Advanced (for IITs/IIST) — plus state CETs
Needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) in Class 12.
If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
Aerospace Engineering is a 4-year engineering degree focused on the design, development, testing and maintenance of aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, missiles and drones. Its foundation rests on aerodynamics (how air flows over a body), propulsion (jet and rocket engines), aircraft structures, flight mechanics and avionics.
For most of its history in India, this field meant one thing: government. That's genuinely changing — India's updated space policy has opened the door to private space startups like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos, alongside expanding commercial aviation and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) hubs from Boeing and Airbus. It's still a smaller job market than core branches like Mechanical or Civil, but it's no longer only ISRO or nothing.
Build a genuinely strong Physics and Maths base for JEE Advanced.
JEE Advanced for IITs and IIST, JEE Main for select National Institutes of Technology (NITs), or a state CET/private test elsewhere.
Aerodynamics, propulsion and aircraft structures, building toward a specialisation.
Near-essential for ISRO, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and NAL — start preparing well before final year.
ISRO/DRDO/HAL, a private space startup or MRO role, or an M.Tech/MS.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics fundamentals, Materials Science |
| Year 2 | Aerodynamics I, Aircraft Structures, Thermodynamics, Flight Mechanics |
| Year 3 | Propulsion Systems, Aerodynamics II, Avionics, Control Systems |
| Year 4 | Space Technology & Satellite Systems, an elective (UAV/Drone Technology or Rocket Propulsion), a major project and typically an internship |
CATIA, ANSYS, MATLAB and SolidWorks are standard tools taught for design and structural simulation — practical familiarity with these matters as much as theory when applying to design-focused roles.
The primary national entrance exam for B.Tech admission at NITs, IIITs and most state/private engineering colleges.
The follow-on exam (only for qualified JEE Main candidates) required specifically for admission to the IITs.
Government-funded institutes remain the most economical route: total fees for the full 4-year Aerospace Engineering programme at IITs commonly fall in the ₹2-10 lakh range, with fee waivers available based on family income and category. IIST Thiruvananthapuram is a distinctive case — its scholarship-cum-service bond scheme covers most fees in exchange for a service commitment to ISRO after graduation. Private colleges are considerably more expensive — total costs of roughly ₹8-20 lakh are typical. Always confirm current fees and bond terms directly on your target institute's official admission page.
The gap between a private-sector role and a government/PSU one is unusually wide in this field — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.
Genuinely modest — India's private aerospace job market remains smaller than CSE or Mechanical.
Reported for Management/Design Trainee roles secured through GATE, with strong government job security.
Reported for roles secured through ICRB or SET, including allowances — highly competitive to secure.
An M.Tech via GATE at an IIT or IISc is the standard route for students aiming at research roles or a stronger ISRO/DRDO application. An MS abroad — particularly in the US, Germany or France — is common for students targeting advanced propulsion or aerodynamics research at global aerospace companies. A PhD is the typical path for research scientist roles within ISRO or academic institutions.
| Factor | Aerospace | Mechanical | Robotics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Aircraft, spacecraft, propulsion, aerodynamics | Machines, manufacturing, thermal & fluid systems | Automation, robotics, smart machines |
| Job market size | Small, concentrated (ISRO/DRDO/HAL + a few private players) | Widest PSU/private breadth of any core branch | Growing, spread across manufacturing, Electric Vehicles (EVs) and defence |
| Best known for | ISRO/DRDO/HAL, emerging private space sector | Automobile, manufacturing, widest Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) breadth | Automation/Industry 4.0 across sectors |
| Typical fresher pay | ₹3–5 lakh per annum (LPA) private / ₹7–16 LPA govt-PSU | ₹3–5 LPA private / ₹6–8 LPA PSU | ₹4–8 LPA, varies by specialisation and company |
Aerospace is the most specialised and narrowest of the three — a great choice for a genuine, specific passion, but Mechanical offers far more flexibility if you're not fully certain yet.
Myth: Aerospace engineering guarantees a job at ISRO.
Fact: ISRO recruitment is highly competitive with limited seats through ICRB. A large share of aerospace graduates work in private aviation, manufacturing or general engineering roles instead.
Myth: Aerospace engineering pays as well as CSE straight out of college.
Fact: Private-sector fresher pay in aerospace is often modest (₹3-5 LPA) unless you land a government/PSU role via GATE, ICRB or SET — the field's best pay comes with genuinely extra competitive preparation, not automatically.
Myth: Aerospace engineering is only about building rockets or fighter jets.
Fact: The field also covers commercial aviation, aircraft maintenance (MRO), drones/UAVs, and increasingly private space startups — a much broader set of options than just ISRO or HAL.
