Ethical Hacker / Penetration Tester

8 min read · Security audits by CERT-In empanelled firms · Degree + hands-on skills

Ethical hackers — penetration testers — break into systems with written permission to find weaknesses before criminals do. There is no Government licence: employers hire on skills, a computer degree and respected private certifications. Many government and regulated-sector audits must be done by organisations empanelled by CERT-In, India's national cyber-security agency. Testing without permission is a crime under the IT Act.

Overview

What does an Ethical Hacker do?

  • Penetration testers scan, probe and exploit apps, networks, cloud setups and devices, then report risks and fixes.
  • They run vulnerability assessments (VAPT), red-team exercises and bug-bounty research.
  • Clear reporting matters as much as hacking skill — clients need to understand and fix the issues.

  • Dislike writing reports.
  • Expect a certificate alone to land a job.
