There's no limit on how many subjects you can register for in one session, as long as exam timings don't clash — a genuinely flexible pace-setting feature of the IAI system.
IAI does not impose a fixed timeframe to complete the 13 subjects — you can take exams at whatever pace suits your circumstances, which is unusual among the courses. Progress is marked by three membership levels:
IAI's exam fees are charged per subject per attempt, alongside membership fees, so total cost depends heavily on how many attempts each subject takes. This is widely regarded as one of the toughest professional qualifications in India — 13 rigorous, heavily quantitative subjects with no fixed timeline. Most candidates take roughly 5–8 years from starting preparation to completing Fellowship, often while working full-time as an actuarial trainee or analyst. A meaningful share of candidates who clear the early Core Principles subjects choose to stop at Associate level rather than push through to Fellowship, and that's a genuinely viable, well-paid career stopping point too.

IAI has a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) with the UK's Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) — a Fellow of IAI (FIAI) with 3+ years of post-qualification experience can be recognised as a Fellow of IFoA (FIA), and vice versa, opening doors across the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE and Australia without repeating the full exam sequence. Many Indian actuarial students also sit IFoA papers directly, since the Core Principles syllabus (CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2) is shared between the two bodies.
Routine calculation work is increasingly assisted by modelling software, but actuarial work has always been about far more than computation — it's about judgment: which assumptions are reasonable for a 40-year pension liability, how a new insurance product should be priced, and how a company should hold capital against a rare but catastrophic event. That judgment, backed by legal and professional accountability, is exactly what Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot yet replace, and it's precisely what IRDAI legally requires a human Fellow to sign off on.
