Needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) in Class 12 plus a qualifying National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) score.
If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) is a 5.5-year professional degree in Homeopathy, a system of medicine based on the principle of "like cures like," using highly diluted substances. The curriculum combines homeopathic philosophy — including the Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica — with modern medical science subjects like anatomy, physiology and pathology.
Here's the honest, important context most guides skip: homeopathy's clinical effectiveness for treating disease is genuinely disputed by mainstream scientific and medical bodies. A large 2015 systematic review by Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council found no reliable evidence that homeopathy works for any health condition beyond a placebo effect, and similar conclusions have been reached by other major scientific reviews. At the same time, BHMS is a legally recognised, licensed qualification in India, regulated by the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH) under the Ministry of AYUSH, and millions of Indians choose homeopathic treatment. Both facts are true simultaneously, and worth understanding before committing to this path.
Build a strong Biology, Chemistry and Physics base for NEET-UG.
Separate AACCC and state counselling for BHMS, distinct from MBBS/BDS.
Homeopathic philosophy alongside modern anatomy and physiology, with clinical training.
Government AYUSH post, private clinic employment, or building your own practice.
Entrepreneurial clinic owners are reported to reach financial independence within 3-5 years.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Organon of Medicine, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Homeopathic Pharmacy |
| Year 2 | Materia Medica, Pathology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology |
| Year 3 | Repertory, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Community Medicine |
| Year 4 | Practice of Medicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Organon (advanced) |
| Internship (Year 5) | Full-time, hands-on clinical rotations across homeopathic hospital departments |
Like BAMS, the curriculum genuinely blends homeopathic philosophy with modern medical science subjects — this dual grounding is part of why BHMS graduates are also eligible for many diagnostic, teaching and public health roles beyond direct patient consultation.
The national entrance exam used for BHMS admission across homeopathic medical colleges in India.
Government BHMS colleges are among the more affordable medical-adjacent degrees, with annual fees commonly in the lower range of the broader AYUSH sector's ₹15,000-6,00,000 per year spread — government institutes sitting well toward the lower end, private colleges toward the middle and higher end. Total 5.5-year costs at government colleges are typically modest, in the low lakhs, while private colleges can run considerably higher. Always confirm current fees directly on your target college's official admission page, since this range varies enormously across institutions.
These are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees — government vs private and employed vs practice-building change the picture significantly.
Roughly ₹20,000-55,000/month — government roles generally pay more than private at entry level.
Reported starting figure for government AYUSH Medical Officer positions, plus standard government benefits.
Reported for experienced practitioners and consultants; entrepreneurial clinic owners reported to reach financial independence within 3-5 years.
MD (Homeopathy) is the standard postgraduate specialisation, accessed via National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Postgraduate (NEET-PG) for AYUSH courses, and is reported to meaningfully increase both earning potential and professional standing. Some graduates instead pursue research through homeopathic research councils, move into teaching at homeopathic medical colleges, or build a career in drug/health inspection roles within government health departments. A small number of BHMS graduates also pursue opportunities abroad, particularly in countries like Germany where homeopathy has an established regulatory presence.
| Factor | BHMS | BAMS | MBBS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Homeopathy — dilution-based traditional treatment | Ayurveda — traditional Indian medicine + modern anatomy/physiology | General medicine & surgery (allopathic), whole-body healthcare |
| Scientific evidence base | Genuinely disputed by mainstream scientific bodies | Traditional system with growing modern clinical integration | Evidence-based modern medicine |
| Government NEET cutoff | Accessible — qualifying floor just 50th percentile | Accessible — qualifying floor just 50th percentile | ~650–700+ (considerably higher) |
| Realistic fresher salary | ₹2.5–6.5 lakh per annum (LPA) | ₹3–5 LPA (employed) | ₹6–12 LPA (post-internship) |
BHMS and BAMS are both genuine, licensed AYUSH medical routes — the right choice between them, if either interests you, comes down to which system of medicine and its underlying philosophy genuinely resonates with you.
Myth: Homeopathy's effectiveness is scientifically settled and undisputed.
Fact: Major scientific reviews, including a large 2015 Australian government review, found no reliable evidence that homeopathy works for any health condition beyond a placebo effect — this remains a genuinely contested area, distinct from the degree's legal recognition in India.
Myth: BHMS is only a fallback for students who can't get MBBS.
Fact: BHMS is a legally recognised, licensed profession with genuine, growing government job opportunities through AYUSH — it's a real career path for students genuinely interested in homeopathy, though prospective students should weigh the scientific debate honestly first.
Myth: BHMS doctors earn very little compared to other AYUSH graduates.
Fact: Reported fresher salaries (₹2.5-6.5 LPA) are broadly comparable to BAMS, and government AYUSH Medical Officer roles have been reported starting around ₹44,900/month plus benefits — a genuinely competitive entry-level government package.
