Punjab B.Tech Admission 2026-27 — Class 12 Merit, 85% State Quota, Reservation, Documents
Punjab fills B.E. / B.Tech first-year seats in the colleges of I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University through a single online counselling. This page follows the Department of Technical Education notification of 5 May 2026 for B.Tech 1st year and the IKGPTU counselling schedule for 2026-27.
One counselling for two state universities
The Governor of Punjab appointed IKGPTU, Kapurthala to run online centralised counselling for degree engineering seats in institutions and universities in Punjab for 2026-27, jointly with MRSPTU, Bathinda. Admission is on the inter-se merit of the qualifying examination. [1]
UG counselling 2026-27 [2]
| Round | Registration & choices | Result | Reporting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 – 18 Jun 2026 | 19 – 21 Jun | 26 – 30 Jun |
| 2 | 2 – 5 Jul 2026 | 6 – 8 Jul | 14 – 16 Jul |
| 3 | 18 – 20 Jul 2026 | 21 – 22 Jul | 24 – 28 Jul |
After three rounds, remaining seats are filled at the college level; no separate notice is issued. [2]
Class 12 with 45% in the qualifying subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science or the other subjects in table 8.4 of the AICTE handbook for the branch, with at least 45% (40% for reserved categories) in those subjects together; or D.Voc in the same or allied sector.
- A three-year diploma with 45% (40% reserved) may also take first-year seats if lateral-entry vacancies are exhausted.
- Candidates whose result is pending may join counselling; the admission stays provisional until they prove eligibility. [1]
Class 12 marks — not an entrance test
The notification orders admission on the inter-se merit of the qualifying examination for both the 85% Punjab quota and the 15% outside quota, counselled together. Reserved candidates are first considered in the general category, then in their own. [1]
This is different from most states: Punjab's B.Tech counselling does not use JEE Main or a state test for ranking. B.Arch, by contrast, needs NATA. [3]
₹2,000 counselling fee
- A non-refundable counselling fee of ₹2,000 is collected once; anyone who already paid the registration fee on admissions.ptu.ac.in need not pay again.
- If you change college during counselling, the earlier college refunds your fee minus ₹1,000; on upgradation in a later round, nothing is deducted. A seat surrendered within 7 days of the end of counselling is also refunded minus ₹1,000.
- Tuition Fee Waiver seats exist only in B.Tech, BCA and B.Pharmacy, for Punjab residents with family income below ₹8 lakh. [1]
85% for Punjab residents
To claim an 85% seat you must be a resident of Punjab under the Department of Personnel letters of 1996 and 1999, or have passed both 10+1 and 10+2 as a regular student from institutions in Punjab. Children of defence personnel posted in Punjab need only have passed 10+2 in Punjab; children of Punjab government employees posted outside the state are exempt. [1]
