Tamil Nadu: Entrance Exams, Quotas & Scholarships

Entrance exams·Reservation & domicile·Counselling·Polytechnic·Rural schemes

Tamil Nadu is unusual because engineering admission through TNEA is based on Class 12 marks rather than a separate entrance test. The state follows its own reservation system, and medical admission uses NEET-UG followed by state counselling.

Tamil Nadu entrance exams, explained

What each exam is for, who can take it, how it works and how you get selected.

TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions)

Who can apply

Class 12 pass with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or the other eligible combinations; Tamil Nadu candidates get priority for state-quota seats.

How selection works

Counselling is run in rounds with choice filling, allotment and confirmation.

Tip

Focus on your Class 12 marks because they decide your rank.

NEET-UG (for medical)

Who can apply

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Pattern

A national multiple-choice exam.

How selection works

State quota seats are counselled by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee.

Tip

Check the special reservation for government-school students.

TNPSC / TRB

Who can apply

Graduation or higher depending on the post.

Pattern

Written exams and interviews.

How selection works

For state government jobs, not for admission.

Tip

Plan this after graduation.

  • First-graduate and other fee-concession schemes are announced separately by the state each cycle.
Admission process

State counselling portal: step by step

Authority: TNEA (engineering), Tamil Nadu Selection Committee (medical), DOTE (diploma). TNEA counselling is conducted on the official TNEA portal; medical counselling is run by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee.

1Step

Check the dates: the state authority publishes a schedule for registration, document verification, choice filling and each round.

2Step

Register on the official counselling portal with your exam roll number, mobile number and email, and pay the registration fee if asked.

3Step

Upload or present documents: mark sheets, entrance score card, domicile, category and income certificates, photo ID and passport photographs.

4Step

Fill your college and course choices in order of preference. Add more choices than you think you need; the system allots the first available choice on your list.

5Step

Check the provisional allotment result when it is published, then accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee or reporting to the college as instructed.

6Step

Choose whether to freeze the seat or float for a better option in the next round, if the state allows it.

7Step

Report to the allotted college with original documents, pay the fees and complete admission before the last date, because a missed deadline can cancel your seat.

Medical route: NEET-UG score, then state counselling by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee, alongside MCC counselling.

Diploma

Polytechnic and diploma options

The Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) runs diploma admission in Tamil Nadu on Class 10 marks. Many students take diploma first and later join engineering in the second year through lateral entry. Check DOTE for the current notification.
