Overview

What is India Post GDS?

The Department of Posts recruits GDS through online engagement schedules, usually more than once a year, with tens of thousands of vacancies across postal circles. Candidates choose divisions and posts, and a system-generated merit list based on Class 10 marks decides selection.

GDS posts are Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak. GDS are not regular departmental employees — they are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) for 4–5 hours of work per day.

Who should choose India Post GDS

A good fit if you...

  • Have passed Class 10 with good marks and want a government-linked job close to home.
  • Live in or are willing to live in the village where the post office is located.
  • Want time to study further alongside a part-day job.

Think twice if you...

  • Want a full-time regular government job with full pay scale from day one.
  • Do not know the local language of the circle.
  • Have low Class 10 marks — selection is purely merit-based on those marks.

What gives you an edge

Class 10 marks

The single most important factor — higher marks mean better chances.

Step-by-step plan for your background

Arts / Humanities

If you're from Arts

  1. Selection here does not depend on your Class 11–12 stream — only the marks specified in the notification count.
  2. Use the job or training period to prepare for Staff Selection Commission (SSC) or state exams, where your General Knowledge (GK) strength helps.
  3. Keep improving your computer skills.
Commerce

If you're from Commerce

  1. Your stream does not affect selection, but accounts knowledge helps in day-to-day work with cash and records.
  2. Use this as a base to prepare for Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL), bank clerk or departmental exams.
  3. Keep documents and certificates organised.
Science

If you're from Science

  1. Your stream does not affect selection, but technical aptitude helps on the job.
  2. Use the experience to target technical railway or SSC exams later.
  3. Keep improving your computer and device skills.
