Weight classes, bout format and who may box at LA28

Boxing's world body is now World Boxing, which the IOC provisionally recognised on 25 February 2025 as the international federation for boxing in the Olympic Movement. Since 1 January 2025 elite men and women each have 10 weight classes (the old 12 + 12 were dropped). [4][3]

  • The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games use the same seven classes per gender as LA28 — the first Commonwealth Games with equal men's and women's classes. [4]
  • World Boxing bouts are three rounds of three minutes with one minute's rest between rounds.
  • Boxers weigh in and see the doctor every competition day. [5][2]

The Senior World Championship and Senior Asian Championship are also on the Ministry's boxing list; the amount depends on how often the event is held (for example ₹20 / 14 / 8 lakh for a World Championship held every two years). At India's National Boxing Championships 2026 in Noida (January 2026), titles went to Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, world champion Minakshi Hooda and Olympian Pooja Rani; Jadumani Singh won the men's 55 kg. [8]

03 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

The papers, the sex test and the knockout lay-off

  • Every boxer needs a Competition Record Book with photo — bring the old one too if the new book has no bouts.
  • A yearly medical examination, signed and stamped by a registered doctor.
  • A pre-competition medical certificate (Fit to Box) not older than 3 months, confirming the boxer is not infectious for HIV 1 and 2, Hepatitis B or C.
  • Women boxers: a signed Declaration of Non-Pregnancy not older than 7 days before the entry check.
  • A signed doping-control consent. Missing or incomplete papers mean the Medical Jury can declare the boxer unfit to box — with no appeal. [6]
  • Since August 2025 every boxer over 18 entering a World Boxing owned or sanctioned event must take a once-in-a-lifetime PCR (SRY gene) test, or an equivalent genetic test, to confirm sex at birth; national federations carry out the testing. [7]

World Boxing suspension after head blows [6]

World Boxing suspension after head blows

Before returning, a doctor or neurologist must declare the boxer fit; World Boxing highly recommends a CT or MRI scan. Recent surgery (90 days) or a seizure in the last 3 months bars a boxer at the pre-bout check. [6]

  • Under the anti-doping code the boxer must be available for testing in and out of competition and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; if no permitted treatment exists, apply to NADA for a TUE. [12]

Boxing is one of SAI's 13 priority disciplines. NCOEs give boarding, coaches, sports science and individual diets set by nutritionists. [14]

Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Vijayanagar, Karnataka lists boxing among its sports and runs the Kotak Karma Boxing Programme — training, equipment, nutrition and support for talented boxers — on a campus with athlete residences, recovery, physiotherapy and biomechanics. [18][19]

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Gloves, headguards and who pays the bills

  • At World Boxing events the organisers supply the gloves, headguards, tape and gauze/Velcro bandages; boxers bring the rest of their kit.
  • A boxer's own training gloves, headgear, mouthguard and shoes are the family's or academy's cost until a scheme picks the boxer up. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [5]

Corporate money reaches boxers through programmes such as IIS's Kotak Karma Boxing Programme and the JSW Sports Excellence Programme, which runs elite pathways, nutrition planning and academic support across IIS sports. [18]

  • Weight-cutting with pills or powders is a doping risk: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — food first, with a certified nutritionist. [13]
07 Earning channels & central job quotas

Awards, pension and sports-quota jobs

  • Boxing is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
  • Medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions.
  • These central instructions do not apply to Railways Services, the Department of Atomic Energy, the Department of Space and some DRDO technical services. [20]
  • Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons: ₹12,000–20,000 a month after retirement.
  • National Sports Awards — Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dronacharya (coaches). [17]
08 Disqualification traps

Mistakes that end a boxer's tournament

  • Arriving without the papers — record book, yearly medical, 3-month Fit-to-Box certificate, non-pregnancy declaration: no papers, no bout.
  • Sparring during a knockout suspension — the lay-off covers training, not just bouts, and is written in the record book. [6]
  • Skipping every LA28 qualifier — even host and universality places need at least one qualification tournament. [1]
  • Age fraud, doping or misconduct are grounds for weeding a boxer out of SAI centres. [14]
09 Real-world player doubts

Late start, sports-quota jobs, money and certificates — straight answers

I am 18, 20 or 22. Is it too late to start boxing?

Not for competing: World Boxing's 2026 elite events take boxers born 1986 to 2007 (ages 19 to 40), and LA28 takes those born 1988 to 2009. It is late for the free pipelines — SAI Training Centres take ages 12–18 and KIRTI tests ages 9–18 — so an adult beginner trains at a club or state centre and must win state and national bouts to be scouted. The real clock is the job deadline: Railways sports quota stops at 25 and CRPF at 23 (28 for an unreserved sportsperson after relaxation). [2][1][14][16][22][23]

Which government jobs can boxing get me?

Three doors. Central Group C posts under DoPT rules list boxing among 65 sports (Railways excluded). Railways recruit on their own: Western Railway's 2026-27 notice had Level 1 boxing posts — men 50, 70, 75 and 90+ kg; women 48, 60, 70 and 81+ kg. CRPF's 2026 sports quota (521 Head Constable and Constable posts) includes boxing. [20][22][23]

Railways fee ₹500 (₹400 back if you attend the trial; ₹250, refunded in full on attending, for SC/ST, women, PwBD, minorities, ex-servicemen and EBC). CRPF fee ₹100 for UR/OBC/EWS men; free for women, SC, ST and ex-servicemen. CRPF picks sign a ₹1 lakh bond to serve at least 3 years. [22][23]

We are a lower-middle-class family. How do we keep costs down?

Aim for the free seats. SAI Training Centres and NCOEs give coaching, boarding, sports science and diet; a Khelo India athlete gets ₹6.28 lakh a year (₹1.20 lakh cash). At World Boxing events the organisers supply gloves, headguards, tape and bandages. A boxer in hardship can apply to the PDU National Welfare Fund for up to ₹2.50 lakh. [14][17][5]

Does any 'national' certificate count for a job?

No. Railways will not recruit on a certificate from a federation MoYAS did not recognise at the time of the championship, and CRPF counts only championships of MoYAS-recognised federations or the IOA's National Games. For boxing, Railways also accept Youth international results (on or after 25 Sep 2016) in place of Junior, and treat the Under-17 championship as the boxing Junior National. [22][23]
