Surfing — waves, the Asian Games route & LA28
Education Margdarshan's surfing map in simple words: what Olympic surfing is, how 24 men and 24 women reach LA28, why the 2026 Asian Games mattered for India, India's first Asian surfing medal, where surfing grows in India, and the honest picture on money and jobs.
What Olympic surfing is
Surfers ride ocean waves on a shortboard and judges score their rides — at the Asian Surfing Championships, for example, the bronze went to a surfer with 12.60 points. Surfers must be in good standing with their national federation and the ISA, under the ISA Rule Book. [1][3]
Olympics, Asian Games — and India's firsts
How LA28 surfing places are won [1]
| Route | What it gives |
|---|---|
| World Surf League Championship Tour 2027/2028 | Top professionals |
| ISA World Surfing Games 2026, 2027, 2028 | Places, incl. one for the best team per gender |
| Asian Games 2026 | One place for the best eligible Asian surfer |
| Host and universality | 1 + 1 per gender |
- India earned its first-ever Asian Games surfing spots (one man, one woman) through ranking points at the Asian Surfing Championships 2024.
- Ramesh Budhial became the first Indian to win an Asian Surfing Championships medal in the open men's category — bronze at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. [2][3]
- Asian Games medals earn the Sports Ministry's cash award (gold ₹30 lakh, silver ₹20 lakh, bronze ₹10 lakh); surfing championships are not separately listed in the scheme. [4]
Standing and anti-doping
- To surf at LA28 you must be in good standing with your national federation and the ISA. [1]
- Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

Every stage from first club to the international level, the detailed route and what to eat from stage 1, with sources.
Where surfers train
- Surfing is not among SAI's NCOE or STC sports; surfers train on the coast with clubs and schools. [6]
Boards, travel — and who pays
- You need a board and travel to ranking events. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]
Who pays [7]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Straight answers
Can an Indian surfer really reach LA28?
The Asian door was the 2026 Asian Games, which gave one LA28 place to the best eligible Asian surfer — and India qualified for those Games for the first time. The other doors are the ISA World Surfing Games in 2026, 2027 and 2028. [1][2]
Does surfing count for government jobs?
Not through the central sports quota today — it is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports. Asian Games medals still earn cash awards. [8][4]
