Bachelor of Arts (BA) History studies how civilisations, empires, movements and ideas developed over time — from ancient India to the modern world — and trains you to read evidence, question sources and build an argument. It's one of the most common and respected degrees for students aiming at Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and other civil services, but it also opens into archives, museums, heritage work, research and teaching. This guide covers exactly what the degree involves and where it leads.

If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
BA History is a 3-year undergraduate degree (4 years for Honours with Research under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020) that studies human civilisation across Ancient, Medieval and Modern periods, with a strong focus on Indian history alongside key developments in world history. Rather than memorising dates, the degree trains you to interpret primary sources, compare historical accounts, understand cause and consequence, and write structured, evidence-based arguments — skills that transfer directly into law, journalism, civil services and research.
It's offered widely across Indian universities. Delhi University colleges — Hindu College, Miranda House, St. Stephen's and Lady Shri Ram College — are among the most competitive destinations, alongside Jadavpur University, Presidency University Kolkata, Banaras Hindu University and Jamia Millia Islamia, under the University Grants Commission (UGC) framework.
History at Class 11-12 helps but isn't mandatory.
Or apply directly on merit, depending on your target university.
Ancient, medieval and modern periods, plus historiography and research methods.
UPSC prep, a Master of Arts (MA) in History, or an entry-level research/teaching/government role.
| Year | Typical subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Ancient Indian History, History of Modern Europe, Social Formations & Cultural Patterns, English/language elective |
| Year 2 | Medieval Indian History, Rise of the Modern West, History of India (c.750-1550), Environmental History |
| Year 3 | Modern Indian History (colonial & post-colonial), Historiography, History of Popular Movements, a research project/elective |
Under the NEP 2020 Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, students at colleges like DU can exit after 1 year (Certificate), 2 years (Diploma), 3 years (Degree) or complete 4 years for an Honours with Research degree.
BA History is one of the most affordable degrees in India at government-funded colleges — total fees for the full 3-year course at a DU or central university college are typically in the range of ₹15,000-60,000, well below professional or private-college courses. Private and deemed universities charge considerably more, often ₹1-3 lakh per year. Merit-based, SC/ST and income-linked scholarships are available at most government institutions. Always confirm current fees directly on your target college's official admission page.
Pay depends heavily on the specific role, whether you clear a competitive exam, and whether you pursue further study — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.
Typical starting range in content, research support, junior teaching or general administrative roles.
Reported for museum curators, heritage consultants and archivists with a relevant master's degree.
IAS/IPS/IFS and similar roles, including allowances — but only after clearing UPSC or a state Public Service Commission (PSC) exam.
An MA in History — at institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University or Jadavpur University — is the natural next step for students aiming at research, teaching (via UGC-NET) or a career in archives and museums. Others pursue a Master's in Archaeology, Museology or Archival Studies for specialised heritage roles, or move into law, journalism or civil services preparation, all of which value the reading, writing and analytical skills the degree builds.
| Factor | BA History | BA Political Science |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Past events, causation & long-term change | Government, institutions & current governance |

| Typical admission route | CUET / merit | CUET / merit |
Neither is objectively "better" for civil services — both are widely used. Choose based on which subject you'd genuinely enjoy reading for three to four years, since that sustains you through both the degree and any exam preparation afterward.
