Bodybuilding — poses, judging, stage rules & sports-quota jobs
Education Margdarshan's bodybuilding map in simple words: how a contest runs from prejudging to the posedown, what judges look for, the weight, height and age classes, what you may and may not wear or put on your skin, the anti-doping risk, and the government jobs advertised for bodybuilders in 2026 — with the certificate trap that catches many.
How a bodybuilding contest is judged
IFBB men's bodybuilding — the four stages [1]
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Prejudging — elimination round | Only if a class has more than 15 athletes; four poses; the top 15 go through |
| Prejudging — Round 1 | Four poses as a line-up, then comparisons of the seven mandatory poses |
| Finals — Round 2 | The top 6 do the seven poses together, twice (order reversed) |
| Posedown | 30–60 seconds to the organiser's music — not scored |
The seven mandatory poses [1]
| # | Pose |
|---|---|
| 1 | Front double biceps |
| 2 | Front lat spread |
| 3 | Side chest |
| 4 | Back double biceps |
| 5 | Back lat spread |
| 6 | Side triceps |
| 7 | Abdominals and thighs |
- Judges look at muscular bulk, balanced development, density and definition, proportion, symmetry and skin tone, and favour a harmonious, classical physique with good posture.
- The Chief Judge can stop or disqualify an athlete whose body is far from the accepted standard — for example an extended belly, unnatural muscle shape, gynecomastia or too much body fat.
- On stage you may not chew gum or drink. Be in the warm-up area at least 45 minutes before you are called. [1]
IFBB senior men's weight classes (kg, up to and including) [1]
| Class | Limit |
|---|---|
| Bantam · Light · Welter | 65 · 70 · 75 |
| Light-middle · Middle · Super-middle | 80 · 85 · 90 |
| Light-heavy · Heavy | 95 · 100 |
| Super-heavy | Over 100 |
- World events can also use three height classes: up to 170 cm, up to 178 cm, and over 178 cm.
- Outside world and continental championships, a class needs at least 3 athletes, or it is merged with another. Junior and master classes are never merged. [1]
Junior and master classes [1]
| Group | Classes |
|---|---|
| Juniors 15–20 and 21–23 | Up to 75 kg · over 75 kg |
| Masters 40–44 and 45–49 | Up to 70 · 80 · 90 · over 90 kg |
| Masters 50–54 | Up to 80 · over 80 kg |
| Masters 55–59 | Up to 75 · over 75 kg |
| Masters 60–64 and 65+ | One open class each |
Where bodybuilding stands
- IFBB holds World, Junior World and Masters World Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships. [1]
Body rules and anti-doping
- Implants or fluid injections that change the natural shape of any muscle or body part are strictly prohibited and can get you disqualified.
- Junior classes start at 15; masters at 40. [1]
- In India you must be available for testing, check every medicine against the Prohibited List, and apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]
- Supplements, fat-burners and 'cutting' products are the biggest doping risk in this sport: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — you are responsible for anything found in your sample. Food first, with a certified nutritionist. [6]
From the gym to a sports-quota job
Every stage from first club to the international level, the detailed route, the age-by-age ladder and what to eat from stage 1, with sources.
Where bodybuilders train
- Bodybuilding is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or Training Centres. Athletes train in private or institutional gyms. [7]
Trunks, tan, oil — and who pays
What the IFBB rules allow on stage [1]
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Posing trunks | One colour, opaque, clean; cover at least ¾ of the glutes and the whole front; sides at least 5 cm; no padding |
| Tan | Self-tan and professional spray or airbrush tans are allowed. A tan that wipes off means you cannot go on stage |
| Glitter & shine | Sparkles, glitter, metallic pearls or gold colour are banned |
| Oil | Body oil and moisturiser in moderation; excessive oil is strictly banned |
| Jewellery & props | Nothing but a wedding ring; no shoes, glasses, watches, wigs or props |
| Head cover | Only a small, tight cap with no visor, for national or religious rules, approved at registration |
- The real costs are the gym, food and travel to contests. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. The Chief Judge decides whether your attire is acceptable and can disqualify you if it is not. [1]
Who pays [8][11]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
| Job trial (CRPF) | The candidate | CRPF fee ₹100 for UR/OBC/EWS men; free for SC, ST and ex-servicemen |

Mistakes that cost bodybuilders
- A tan that wipes off, glitter or gold colouring, or too much oil — you can be kept off the stage.
- Padded trunks, jewellery other than a wedding ring, or any prop.
- Implants or fluid injections to change muscle shape — disqualification.
- Missing your call: be backstage 45 minutes early, or you may be eliminated. [1]
- Counting on a certificate Railways will not accept — IBBF events after 31 December 2021 do not count. [10]
- Taking a supplement without checking it — strict liability means a positive test is your fault even if the label was wrong. [6]
Straight answers
Can bodybuilding really get me a government job?
Yes — it is on the DoPT list of 65 sports. In 2026 CRPF advertised 11 bodybuilding posts for men (55–75 kg) and Western Railway 2 Level 1 posts (55 to +100 kg). Railways do not count IBBF results after 31 December 2021, so keep university or international federation certificates. [9][11][10]
Is bodybuilding in the Olympics or the Asian Games?
No. It is not in the LA28 Olympic list or the 2026 Asian Games, and it is not on the Sports Ministry's cash-award list. The IFBB runs World, Junior World and Masters World Championships. [2][3][4][1]
