Overview

What is SSC CGL?

The CGL Examination is conducted every year by the SSC to fill posts in central ministries, departments and constitutional bodies. Candidates fill one application, rank their post preferences, and are allotted posts based on their Tier 2 rank, preferences and eligibility.

Since the 2022 restructure, Tier 1 is qualifying and the final merit list is based on Tier 2. Tier 2 includes a Computer Knowledge module and a Data Entry Speed Test, and separate papers for Junior Statistical Officer and Assistant Audit Officer posts.

Fit check

Who should choose SSC CGL

A good fit if you...

  • Are a graduate (or final-year student) looking for a stable central government career with good growth.
  • Are comfortable with maths, reasoning and English at an aptitude level.
  • Want a range of post options — from field roles like Inspector to desk roles like ASO.

Think twice if you...

  • Want to stay in one city — many posts are transferable across a zone or all of India.
  • Dislike quantitative aptitude; maths carries heavy weight in Tier 2.
  • Are aiming only for officer-level Group A roles from day one — consider Union Public Service Commission – Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE) instead.

What gives you an edge

Any graduation

Bachelor of Arts (BA), BCom, BSc, BTech, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and others are all eligible for most posts.

Maths / Statistics graduates

Needed for Junior Statistical Officer (Maths with 60% in Class 12, or Statistics in graduation).

Commerce graduates

Accountancy and finance knowledge helps for AAO (Paper III) and Accountant posts.

Step-by-step plan for your background

Arts / Humanities

If you're from Arts

  1. Use your history, polity and geography reading as a head start for General Awareness.
  2. Start maths from Class 8–10 arithmetic, then move to algebra, geometry and trigonometry — one focused hour every day.
  3. Turn your reading habit into English marks: daily comprehension, vocabulary lists and error-spotting practice.
Commerce

If you're from Commerce

  1. Your arithmetic (percentage, profit and loss, interest) is already strong — extend it to algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  2. Accountancy knowledge helps directly for Accountant, Auditor and AAO-type posts.
  3. Build General Awareness with a static General Knowledge (GK) notebook and 15 minutes of current affairs daily.
Science

If you're from Science

  1. Maths and reasoning are your strengths — work on speed with timed sectional tests.
  2. General science questions are easy marks; spend the saved time on English and history/polity GK.
  3. In mocks, learn to skip lengthy questions — over-solving is the common mistake for Science students.
