Entrance exam NDA & NA (UPSC) + 5-day SSB interview
Army wing accepts any stream; Navy and Air Force wings need Physics and Maths.
If this path doesn't work out — or you want options — these guides share skills or eligibility:
NDA is one of the world's most respected military training institutions, where future officers of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force train together before joining their respective services. Students can apply after Class 12, and successful candidates become commissioned officers — Class-I Gazetted Officers — at a young age, a genuinely direct route unmatched by most other career paths.
Admission runs through the UPSC, the same body that conducts the Civil Services Examination. The process is deliberately two-gated: a demanding written exam tests academic ability, followed by a five-day SSB interview that assesses leadership, personality and psychological fitness — a genuinely different, and in many ways tougher, filter than academic exams alone.
Confirm your preferred wing early — Navy/Air Force need Physics and Maths specifically.
Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT), objective type with negative marking.
OIR, PPDT, psychology tests, Group Testing Officer tasks, personal interview and conference.
Combined written and SSB marks (out of 1800 total) determine final selection.
NDA (3 years) plus a service-specific academy (roughly 1 year), then commissioning as an officer.
| Phase | What it covers |
|---|---|
| NDA (3 years) | Combined academic training (leading to a BA/BSc/BTech-equivalent degree) alongside military drill, physical training and leadership development, common to all three services |
| Service-specific academy (~1 year) | Indian Military Academy (Army), Indian Naval Academy (Navy), or Air Force Academy (Air Force) — specialised training for the chosen service |
| Commissioning | Graduates are commissioned as a Lieutenant (Army), Sub-Lieutenant (Navy), or Flying Officer (Air Force) |
The written exam itself covers Mathematics (300 marks) and a General Ability Test spanning English and General Knowledge (600 marks), for 900 marks total — a genuinely broad academic bar, not a narrow specialist exam.
Unlike most other career paths, NDA involves no tuition fees — training is fully funded, and cadets receive a stipend of ₹56,100 per month throughout the roughly 4-year training period at the NDA and the respective service academy. This is a genuine, significant financial advantage over degree routes that require years of tuition payment before any income begins.
These are broad, commonly reported ranges as of the 7th Pay Commission — the 8th Pay Commission is expected to revise these figures upward.
Paid throughout the roughly 4-year NDA and service academy training period.
Starting basic pay of ₹56,100 plus Military Service Pay and allowances, varying by posting location.
Reported for the most senior rank, Chief of Army Staff — pay rises steadily through the officer rank ladder with promotions.
Promotion through the officer ranks — Lieutenant to Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and beyond — follows a structured, largely merit- and time-based ladder, with genuine opportunities to specialise in engineering, aviation, intelligence or command roles as a career progresses. Officers can also pursue advanced military education at institutions like the Defence Services Staff College, and many senior officers transition into consulting, corporate security leadership, or public service roles after retirement, carrying real, respected credibility from their service record.
| Factor | NDA | CDS | Agnipath/Agniveer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry point | After Class 12 | After graduation (any stream) | After Class 10/12, depending on entry |
| Outcome | Permanent commission as an officer | Permanent commission as an officer | 4-year enlisted tenure — not officer rank |
| Training duration | ~4 years (NDA + service academy) | ~1 year at the service-specific academy | Shorter, role-specific training |
| Post-service outcome | Full career + pension, as officer rank progression continues | Full career + pension, as officer rank progression continues | Only a portion retained after 4 years; others exit with a lump-sum package, not a full pension |
These are genuinely different tracks with different eligibility, training length, and rank outcomes — NDA and CDS both lead to a full officer career, while Agnipath is a separate, shorter, non-officer entry scheme with only partial retention after the initial term.
Myth: NDA and Agnipath (Agniveer) are the same route into the armed forces.
Fact: NDA leads to a permanent commission as an officer after roughly 4 years of training. Agnipath is a genuinely separate, shorter 4-year enlisted-tier scheme for soldiers, sailors and airmen, with only a portion retained afterward and no automatic officer rank or full pension.
Myth: Clearing the NDA written exam means you're basically selected.
Fact: The written exam is only the first gate. The five-day SSB interview that follows carries equal weight (900 of 1800 total marks) and has its own significant elimination rate, testing leadership and personality traits that can't be crammed for.
Myth: Only Science students with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) can apply for NDA.
Fact: The Army wing accepts candidates from any Class 12 stream — Science, Commerce or Arts. Only the Navy and Air Force wings specifically require Physics and Mathematics.
