Canoe & Kayak — sprint, slalom & the road to LA28
Education Margdarshan's paddling map for India in simple words: the difference between a kayak and a canoe, the flat-water sprint and white-water slalom races, boat rules and gate penalties, the age groups, the new LA28 event list and how India can qualify through Asia, the SAI centres, who pays and the CRPF jobs for paddlers.
Kayak or canoe, sprint or slalom
- A kayak (K) is paddled with a double-bladed paddle; a canoe (C) with a single-bladed paddle. The number after the letter is the crew size — K1, K2, K4, C1, C2.
- Canoe sprint is a straight race on flat water in lanes. Canoe slalom is a timed run down a white-water course through 18–25 gates, of which 6 or 8 must be taken upstream. [1][2]
LA28 canoe sprint events [3]
| Men | Women |
|---|---|

| K4 500 m | K4 500 m |
| C1 1000 m | C1 200 m |
| C2 500 m | C2 500 m |
- LA28 slalom events: kayak single, canoe single and kayak cross for men and women.
- Slalom penalties: touching a pole costs 2 seconds; missing a gate, going through it the wrong way or pushing it on purpose costs 50 seconds. [4][2]
Sprint boat limits (ICF) [1]

Olympics, Asian Games — and the cash that follows
LA28 paddling places [3][4]
| Discipline | Places | Asian route |
|---|---|---|
| Canoe sprint | 236 (117 per gender + 2 universality); max 5 kayakers and 3 canoeists per country per gender | 2026 and 2027 ACC Asian Championships, then the 2028 Asian Qualification Competition |
| Canoe slalom | 82 (41 per gender) | Asian Olympic Qualification Competition for the best not-yet-qualified paddlers |
- Places go to the country, not the paddler who won them, and are decided by the Olympic Qualification Ranking and continental competitions. LA28 runs 14–30 July 2028.
- India has won an Asian Games bronze in the men's canoe double 1000 m (Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam). [3][5]
Government cash award for a senior medal (₹ lakh) [6]

Where India's paddlers train
SAI National Centres of Excellence with kayaking & canoeing [8]
| Centre | Other sports there |
|---|---|
| Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kerala | Rowing |
| Jagatpur, Odisha | Rowing |
| Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh | Athletics, boxing, hockey, judo, wushu |
Kayaking & canoeing is also taught at SAI Training Centres and in SAI's school and college extension centres. [8]
Boats, paddles and who pays
- Racing boats must meet ICF length and weight rules, and slalom needs a white-water course — so most paddlers train on SAI or club fleets. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1][8]
Who pays — paddling ladder [8][9]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| SAI centre trainee | Sports Authority of India | Coaching, boarding, sports science, diet |
| Khelo India athlete | Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports | ₹6.28 lakh a year incl. ₹1.20 lakh cash |
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
CRPF and other sports-quota jobs
- CRPF's 2026 sports quota had water-sports posts for men and women in kayaking, kayak slalom, canoeing and canoe slalom (13 posts across these four). [12]
- Kayaking & canoeing is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
- Medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions. [10]
- Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons: ₹12,000–20,000 a month after retirement. [9]
Sprint or slalom, jobs and certificates — straight answers
Sprint or slalom — which should I choose?
Sprint suits power and endurance on flat water over 200–1000 m. Slalom suits boat control and reading moving water through 18–25 gates. India has SAI centres for paddling at Alappuzha, Jagatpur and Bhopal, and CRPF hires in both sprint and slalom events. [3][2][8][12]
Which government jobs can paddling get me?
CRPF's 2026 sports quota had posts in kayaking, kayak slalom, canoeing and canoe slalom. DoPT lists kayaking & canoeing for central Group C posts. Western Railway's 2026-27 notice had no paddling posts. [12][10][11]

CRPF fee ₹100 for UR/OBC/EWS men; free for women, SC, ST and ex-servicemen. CRPF picks sign a ₹1 lakh bond to serve at least 3 years. [11][12]
Does any 'national' certificate count for a job?
No. Railways will not recruit on a certificate from a federation MoYAS did not recognise at the time of the championship, and CRPF counts only championships of MoYAS-recognised federations or the IOA's National Games. [11][12]
