Water Polo — Step-by-Step Roadmap
The whole Water Polo journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Water Polo guide.
Zero to podium — the four stages
-
Stage 1 · Young Grassroots & local entry
Become a strong deep-water swimmer at a swimming club, or with a Railways, police or services team. [6]
-
Stage 2 · Under 18 State to national breakthrough
Junior National Aquatics (Water Polo) Championship — Railways count it as the junior national (boys U18). [9]
-
Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit
12 teams per gender: host, World Cup winner, top two at Budapest 2027, best team of each continent, top three at the 2028 World Qualifier. [2]
Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [11][12]
What your body needs — and anti-doping
- You must swim strongly and stay up in deep water for a full match — standing on the floor is a foul. World Aquatics counts age as at 31 December of the competition year. [1]
- Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

Five-year groups as high as needed, four periods of 6 minutes. Men's masters teams may include women. [1]
Where water polo players train
- SAI lists the Dr SPM Swimming Pool Complex, Delhi as an NCOE for swimming. Water polo needs a deep pool, goals and a team, so most players start at a swimming club or a Railways, police or services team. [6]
Low kit cost — and who pays
- Players need swimwear and a numbered cap; the pool and coach matter most. Education Margdarshan does not print fees — no governing body publishes them. [1]
Who pays [6][7]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| SAI centre trainee | Sports Authority of India | Coaching, boarding, sports science, diet |
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Railways, CRPF and other sports-quota jobs
- CRPF's 2026 sports quota had 19 water polo posts (constable and head constable, men and women) for goalkeepers, forwards, full backs and wings.
- Western Railway's 2026-27 sports quota had Level 1 water polo posts for all-rounders.
- Swimming is one of the 65 sports on the DoPT list for central sports-quota jobs (water polo is not named separately). [10][9][8]
