After graduation

Post-study work visas, STEM extensions & funding proof

1Visa guide

Post-study work visa

A post-study work visa lets you stay and work after graduating, so that you can recover the cost of your degree. Rules differ widely: Germany offers an 18-month job-seeker permit, the UK a Graduate Route, Canada a PGWP, Australia the 485 visa, Ireland a stay-back scheme and the USA OPT. Check duration, conditions and any recent changes before you pick a country.

2Visa guide

STEM extension

The USA gives students with STEM-designated degrees a 24-month OPT extension on top of the first 12 months. Check that your exact programme (by CIP code) is on the official STEM-designated list, because a similar-sounding programme may not qualify.

3Visa guide

Proof of funds

Most countries ask you to show savings or loan sanction that covers tuition and living costs for the first year or longer. Germany's blocked account and Canada's guaranteed investment certificates are examples. Start financial paperwork early.

4Visa guide

Work during study

Most destinations allow limited part-time work during term and more during holidays, with different caps per country. Do not plan to fund your degree through part-time work alone.
