Triathlon — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Triathlon · national triathlon federation in India ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Triathlon journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Triathlon guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Young Grassroots & local entry

Build all three skills — pool, road and track. SAI swimming, cycling and athletics centres are useful bases; no NCOE runs triathlon. [1][7]

  2. Stage 2 · 15–19 State to national breakthrough

Youth and junior super-sprint and sprint races, drafting allowed. [1]

  3. Stage 3 · 18–23 · 18+ National camp & elite trials

U23 races, then elite Continental Cups, World Cups and the Championship Series for Olympic ranking points. [1][2]

  4. Stage 4 · Born ≤2010 International orbit

LA28 ranking window 18 May 2026 – 18 May 2028; 55 per gender. The best not-yet-qualified country at the Asian Games gets a place. [2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [12][13]

05 Training centres & cities

Where triathletes train

  • Triathlon is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or SAI Training Centres. Triathletes combine swimming pools, cycling roads and running tracks — SAI centres for swimming, cycling and athletics are useful bases for the separate skills. [7]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Bike, wetsuit, entries — and who pays

  • Costs come from a race bike that meets the rules for your category (draft-legal races have stricter wheel and handlebar rules), a wetsuit, running shoes and race entries. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]
