Sport Climbing — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Climbing (formerly IFSC) · national climbing federation in India ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Sport Climbing journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Sport Climbing guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Any age Grassroots & local entry

Learn technique and safety on artificial walls at a club or gym; no SAI NCOE or STC runs climbing. [9]

  2. Stage 2 · Under 18 State to national breakthrough

Youth Asian Championships — India hosted one in Jamshedpur, where Joga Purty won a medal. [4]

  3. Stage 3 · 16+ Senior national team

World Cups, Asian Championships and the Asian Games; pick lead, boulder or speed. [4][5][1]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

Places from the 2027 World Championship (3 per event), a World Climbing Asia Qualifier (Sep–Dec 2027) and the 2028 Olympic Q-Series (4). [1][2][3]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [14][15]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Licence, age and anti-doping

  • For LA28 you must be born before 1 January 2012, hold a valid World Climbing international licence for 2028, and not be banned from World Climbing competitions that year. [1]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [8]

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [12][13][11]

05 Training centres & cities

Where climbers train

  • Sport climbing is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or SAI Training Centres; climbers train on artificial walls at clubs and gyms. India has hosted the Youth Asian Climbing Championship in Jamshedpur. [9][4]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Shoes, harness, wall fees — and who pays

  • Climbers need shoes, a harness (lead), chalk and access to a wall. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1]

07 Earning channels & central job quotas

Awards — and the honest job picture

  • Sport climbing is not on the DoPT list of 65 sports for central sports-quota jobs, and neither Western Railway's 2026-27 notice nor CRPF's 2026 sports quota had climbing posts. The main rewards are the cash awards and Khelo India / TOPS support. [11][12][13][7]
