Modern Pentathlon — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) · national federation in India ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Modern Pentathlon journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Modern Pentathlon guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Base sport Grassroots & local entry

Start from a strong base sport — swimmers, runners and fencers often add the other skills, using SAI swimming, athletics, fencing and shooting facilities. [6]

  2. Stage 2 · Youth · senior UIPM events

UIPM World Cups and championships build your ranking. [2]

  3. Stage 3 · Senior Federation camps

No SAI NCOE or STC lists modern pentathlon — athletes combine SAI facilities with their federation's camps. [6]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

32 per gender. Asia's 5 places come from the 2027 Asian Championships (one per country); more via World Cups, Worlds and rankings. [2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [11][12]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Eligibility and anti-doping

  • Athletes must meet the Olympic Charter and UIPM rules and take part in the qualification events listed in the UIPM LA28 system. [2]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

  • Pentathletes need fencing kit, swimming gear, a laser pistol and running shoes, plus travel to UIPM events. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [2]
