MMA — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA) · FIMMA · International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) ·Last checked 18 Oct 2026

The whole MMA journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main MMA guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Base sport Grassroots & local entry

Learn striking (boxing, kickboxing) and grappling (wrestling, jiu-jitsu) in a gym. No SAI NCOE or STC runs MMA. [1][10]

  2. Stage 2 · Amateur Amateur bouts

3 × 3-minute rounds under amateur rules — no elbows, no knees to the head. A professional record earns no cash award or quota job. [1][7][12]

  3. Stage 3 · Youth · senior Continental championships

AMMA Championships and Youth Championships (China and Uzbekistan in 2026). [3]

  4. Stage 4 · Senior Asian Games

Modern or Traditional MMA, six weight classes, at the Asian Games. MMA is not on the LA28 list. [4][6]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [15][9]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Weigh-in, medical checks and anti-doping

  • Amateurs weigh in on the day of competition, and again on every later day you progress in a tournament.
  • All pre-competition medical examinations and tests are compulsory. After every bout a doctor examines you; refusing that exam means an immediate suspension while it is investigated.
  • A fouled fighter gets up to 5 minutes to recover. [1]
  • The rules prohibit putting any foreign substance on the head or body to gain an advantage. [1]
  • In India you must be available for testing, check every medicine against the Prohibited List, and apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [8]
  • Weight-cutting pills and fat-burners are a doping risk: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — you are responsible for anything found in your sample. [9]

  • An Asian Games medal earns the government cash award (₹30 / 20 / 10 lakh). Fighters who also compete in wrestling, boxing or judo can use those sports' quota routes. [12][13][14][7]
