How to become a Tour Guide — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life·15 student doubts answered ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Age 18 and Class 12 (Class 10 if you are 40 or older) → online Incredible India Tourist Facilitator (IITF Basic) course on the Ministry of Tourism portal → exam → 7-day IITTM training + 7-day internship → IITF certificate and badge. A graduate with IITF Basic can then train as an Incredible India Tourist Guide (Heritage / Adventure). [1]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

00 The job

What the work really is

A tour guide explains a place — its history, culture, customs and stories — to visitors and helps them enjoy it safely. The Ministry of Tourism certifies Incredible India Tourist Facilitators and Incredible India Tourist Guides through an online programme run by IITTM. [1]

A normal working day

  • Lead tourists through monuments, cities, trails or parks.
  • Explain history, culture, customs and local stories.
  • Help visitors with planning, safety and local etiquette.

Pay

Guide earnings depend on tours and tourist season; no official pay scale is published, so none is printed.

Main routes

IITF (Basic)

Age 18+; Class 12 if under 40, Class 10 if 40 or older. Online modules, at least one State module, then the exam, 7 days' IITTM training and 7 working days' internship with a Ministry-approved tour operator. [1]

IITG (Heritage / Adventure)

For graduates who already hold the IITF Basic certificate — heritage guiding at monuments or adventure guiding for trekking, rafting and similar activities. [1]

Spoken-language specialisation

IITF / IITG holders fluent in a foreign language other than English can add a language specialisation; the spoken test needs 50%. [1]

Time and cost

IITF (Basic) registration
₹2,000 (50% off for women) [1]
IITG Advance-Heritage registration
₹5,000 [1]
Exam fee
₹500 [1]

Fees are as printed in the Ministry's January 2021 guidelines and may be revised from time to time.

Hidden challenges

  • Certification needs police verification of character and antecedents. [1]
  • Certificates must be renewed every 5 years through a 2-week online refresher course. [1]
  • Exams are held only twice a year — June and December. [1]

Who should not choose it

  • You dislike talking to strangers all day.
  • You want a fixed monthly salary from day one.
  • You cannot walk or stand for long hours.
01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do at each stage — and the doubts on the way

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

Know your history and your city

    • Tourist facilitators interpret heritage, culture, social customs, myths and local stories for visitors. [1]

Doubt What does a tour guide do?

Explains places — their history, culture, customs, myths and local stories — to visitors and makes their stay pleasant. The Ministry of Tourism certifies Incredible India Tourist Facilitators and Tourist Guides. [1]

Next: Read the Routes list above.

Doubt How can I prepare for guiding while in school?

Learn your state's history, monuments and festivals and practise speaking to groups. The IITF course ends with modules on the destinations and experiences of Indian states — you must complete at least one State module. [1]

Next: Start with the monuments in your own district.

  2. You are here Class 10

Any stream — and languages help

    • A foreign language can be added later as a spoken-language specialisation after the IITF / IITG certificate. [1]

Stream / subjects: Any stream; History and a foreign language help.

Doubt Which stream is best to become a tour guide?

Any. IITF (Basic) needs Class 12 or equivalent (if you are under 40); no stream is fixed. History and languages help with the course and the work. [1]

Next: Pick the stream you like and keep reading history.

Doubt Does learning a foreign language help a tour guide?

Yes. After IITF / IITG you can add a spoken-language specialisation in any foreign language other than English (even more than one); you must score 50% in the spoken test. [1]

Next: Start a foreign language in school or college.

  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

    Register after you turn 18

    • IITF (Basic) needs age 18 on the date of registration and Class 12 (or equivalent) if you are under 40. [1]

    Exams that open here

    • IITF / IITG end-of-programme exam — Usually June and December · enrolment closes 30 Apr and 31 Oct [1]

Doubt What is the minimum age to become a certified tourist facilitator?

18 years on the date you register for the course on the IITF portal. [1]

Next: Register after your 18th birthday.

Doubt Can I register for IITF in Class 12?

You need Class 12 (or equivalent) completed and must be 18. Candidates aged 40 or more need only Class 10. [1]

Next: Keep your Class 12 certificate ready to upload.

Doubt Is the tour guide course online?

The course modules and assignments are online on the IITF portal. The exam is held at a centre you choose, and the 7-day training and internship happen in and around that centre. [1]

Next: Choose a centre near where you want to guide.

  4. You are here In college

    IITF (Basic) course and exam

    • Register on the IITF portal with Aadhaar or Voter ID and an OTP, upload age proof and qualification, and pay the registration fee. [1]
    • Finish every online module to get an Online Course Completion Certificate (valid 3 years) at least one month before you register for the exam. [1]

    Money help at this stage

    IITF / IITG fee waivers

Doubt How much does the IITF course cost?

₹2,000 registration (non-refundable) and ₹500 for the exam, as printed in the January 2021 guidelines. Women get 50% off the Basic enrolment fee; SC, ST, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Aspirational District candidates and IITTM students pay no registration fee. [1]

Next: Upload your category or domicile certificate when you register.

Doubt What happens after I pass the IITF exam?

A 7-day training by IITTM at your exam centre, then a mandatory 7-working-day internship with a Ministry-approved tour operator, document and police verification — and then the IITF certificate and Incredible India badge. [1]

Next: Pick an exam centre where you can also do the training and internship.

Doubt What if I fail the IITF exam?

You can sit the exam again, any number of times, while your Online Course Completion Certificate is valid, paying the exam fee each time if it applies. [1]

Next: Revise the modules before your next attempt.

Doubt Is police verification needed for a tour guide certificate?

Yes. Registration is subject to police verification of character and antecedents; a negative report ends the candidature without notice. False certificates also cancel the certification. [1]

Next: Keep your record clean and documents genuine.

  5. You are here Graduated

Become an Incredible India Tourist Guide

    • IITG (Heritage / Adventure) needs a graduate degree and an IITF (Basic) certificate. [1]

Doubt What is the difference between IITF and IITG?

IITF (Basic) is the entry certificate for tourist facilitators (Class 12). IITG is the next step for graduates who already hold IITF — Heritage for history and culture, Adventure for activities like trekking and rafting. [1]

Next: Finish IITF first, then choose Heritage or Adventure.

Doubt How much is the IITG Heritage fee?

₹5,000 registration for the IITG Advance-Heritage programme in the January 2021 guidelines; SC, ST, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Aspirational District candidates and IITTM students get 50% off. [1]

Next: Check the current fee on the IITF portal.

  6. You are here Working / switching career

    Renew and grow

    • Before your 5-year validity ends, take the free 2-week online refresher by IITTM; the certificate and badge are then renewed for 5 more years. [1]

Doubt Does the tour guide certificate expire?

It is valid for 5 years. Register for the free 2-week online refresher course well before expiry — at least four months ahead — and the Ministry renews your certificate and badge for another 5 years. [1]

Next: Note your expiry date the day you get certified.

Doubt Where are certified guides listed?

All certified badge holders are listed on the Incredible India website, where the Ministry of Tourism keeps a database that tour operators and others can use. [1]

Next: Keep your profile and languages up to date.
