How to become a Special Education Teacher — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life·15 student doubts answered ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Class 12 with 50% → 2-year D.Ed Special Education (RCI, merit-based NBER admission) → CTET Paper I → KVS Special Educator (PRT). Or graduation with 50% → B.Ed Special Education → CTET Paper II → Special Educator (TGT). Every route needs registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (CRR number). [1] [2] [3]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

00 The job

What the work really is

A special education teacher teaches children with disabilities — in special schools and in regular classrooms. Training courses are approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), and only professionals on RCI's Central Rehabilitation Register may hold such posts. [3] [1]

A normal working day

  • Assess each child's needs and write an individual learning plan.
  • Adapt lessons, materials and tests for children with different disabilities.
  • Work with parents, class teachers and therapists.

Pay

Pay
LevelPay (official)
Special Educator (TGT), KVS / NVS 2025Pay Level 7 · ₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400 [2]
Special Educator (PRT), KVS 2025Pay Level 6 · ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400 [2]

These are central school pay levels; state and private school pay is not printed here.

Main routes

Class 12 → D.Ed Special Education

RCI's diploma courses take Class 12 (any stream) with 50%; admission for 2026-27 is on merit only through NBER's online portal — no entrance test. [1]

Graduation → B.Ed Special Education

KVS / NVS Special Educator (TGT) needs graduation with 50% and B.Ed Special Education with 50% (or B.Ed General with a special-education diploma, or other RCI-approved qualifications). [2]

CTET + RCI registration

Special Educator (PRT) needs CTET Paper I; Special Educator (TGT) needs CTET Paper II; both need RCI registration with a valid CRR number. [2]

KVS / NVS posts

The 2025 notice had 494 Special Educator (PRT) and 493 Special Educator (TGT) posts in KVS, and 495 Special Educator posts in NVS. [2]

Time and cost

NBER registration fee 2026
₹500 General / UR · ₹350 OBC, EWS, SC, ST, PwD [1]
KVS / NVS exam fee (2025)
₹1,200 + ₹500 processing (TGT / PRT) [2]

D.Ed and B.Ed course fees differ by institute, so they are not printed.

Hidden challenges

  • Working without RCI registration is an offence under the RCI Act. [3]
  • You need both an RCI-recognised qualification and CTET for KVS / NVS posts. [2]
  • Age limits in the 2025 notice: 30 for Special Educator (PRT), 35 for Special Educator (TGT). [2]

Who should not choose it

  • You lose patience when progress is slow.
  • You do not want to work closely with parents and therapists.
  • You want to teach one fixed syllabus the same way every year.
01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do at each stage — and the doubts on the way

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

    Notice, include, help

    • RCI's draft TET syllabus for special educators covers disabilities under the RPwD Act 2016, inclusive classrooms and assistive technology — useful ideas to start reading early. [4]

Doubt What does a special education teacher do?

Teaches children with disabilities, in special schools or regular classes, using individual plans, adapted lessons and assistive technology. Training courses are approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India. [3] [4]

Next: Read the Routes list above.

Doubt Is RCI registration compulsory for special educators?

Yes. Under the RCI Act only professionals enrolled on the Central Rehabilitation Register may hold such posts, practise or certify; breaking this can mean up to one year in jail and / or a ₹1,000 fine. [3]

Next: Plan for an RCI-recognised course.

  2. You are here Class 10

    Any stream, but keep 50%

    • D.Ed Special Education accepts Class 12 from any stream with 50% marks. [1]

Stream / subjects: Any stream — score at least 50% in Class 12.

Doubt Which stream do I need for special education?

Any stream. RCI's D.Ed Special Education needs 10+2 with 50% in any stream. Some rehabilitation diplomas (such as hearing, speech or prosthetics courses) need PCM / PCB instead. [1]

Next: Choose your stream for the course you want.

  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

    Apply for D.Ed Special Education

    • NBER (RCI's exam board) admits students to diploma courses on merit through one online portal; students waiting for Class 12 results may apply. [1]

    Exams that open here

    • NBER Online Admission 2026 (merit-based) — Circular July 2026 · two merit rounds · no entrance test [1]

    Money help at this stage

    Lower NBER admission registration fee

Doubt Is there an entrance exam for D.Ed Special Education?

No. For 2026-27 all admissions to RCI-approved certificate and diploma courses are on merit only through NBER's online portal, in two merit rounds. [1]

Next: Score well in Class 12 — merit decides.

Doubt Can I apply before my Class 12 result?

Yes. Candidates appearing in Class 12 may apply, provided they meet the course eligibility; otherwise the candidature is rejected. [1]

Next: Keep your result and marksheet ready for the reporting date.

Doubt Do siblings of children with disabilities get any preference?

Yes. Parents and siblings of persons with disabilities (50% or more) get extra merit — 5 marks for 50% disability up to 10 marks for 100% (first blood relation only). [1]

Next: Upload the disability certificate of your family member.

  4. You are here In college

    Diploma or B.Ed Special Education

    • Graduates take B.Ed Special Education with 50% (or B.Ed General with a 1- or 2-year special-education diploma) for TGT-level posts. [2]
    • Register with RCI on its e-registration portal to get your CRR number. [3] [2]

Doubt Is B.Ed General enough to become a special educator?

Not alone. KVS / NVS accept B.Ed General with 50% only together with a 1-year or 2-year Diploma in Special Education, a PG Professional Diploma, or another RCI-approved qualification. [2]

Next: Add an RCI special-education diploma to a B.Ed.

Doubt Which CTET paper does a special educator need?

Paper I for Special Educator (PRT) and Paper II for Special Educator (TGT), with up to 5% relaxation in qualifying marks for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. [2]

Next: Plan CTET in your final year.

Doubt When do I need my RCI registration number?

KVS / NVS list registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India with a valid CRR number as an essential qualification for both Special Educator (PRT) and (TGT) posts. [2]

Next: Register on RCI's e-registration portal as soon as you finish your course.

  5. You are here Graduated

CTET and KVS / NVS posts

    • CTET has 150 MCQs per paper with no negative marking; 60% is the pass mark. [5]

    Exams that open here

    • KVS & NVS Recruitment 01/2025 — Notification 13 Nov 2025 · two tiers + interview [2]

    Money help at this stage

No exam fee for KVS–NVS posts

Doubt How many special educator posts did KVS and NVS advertise?

Notification 01/2025 had 494 Special Educator (PRT) and 493 Special Educator (TGT) posts in KVS, and 495 Special Educator posts in NVS. [2]

Next: Watch cbse.gov.in for the next KVS–NVS notice.

Doubt What is the pay of a KVS special educator?

    Special Educator (TGT) is Pay Level 7 (₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400) and Special Educator (PRT) is Pay Level 6 (₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400). [2]

Next: Pick the level that matches your qualification.

Doubt What is the age limit for KVS special educators?

Up to 30 for Special Educator (PRT) and up to 35 for Special Educator (TGT) in the 2025 notice. [2]

Next: Apply within your age window.

Doubt Is there a fee waiver for the KVS / NVS exam?

SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen pay only the ₹500 processing fee, not the ₹1,200 exam fee (2025 notice). [2]

Next: Pick the right category in the online form.

  6. You are here Working / switching career

A separate TET is being planned

    • In October 2026 RCI published a draft syllabus for a TET for special education teachers and invited comments. [4]

Doubt Will special educators get their own TET?

RCI published a draft syllabus for a TET for special education teachers on 6 October 2026 and invited comments for 10 days. It is a draft — no exam date has been notified. [4]

Next: Check rehabcouncil.nic.in for the final notice.

Doubt What does the draft special-educator TET cover?

Paper I keeps the general CTET parts (child development, maths, EVS, two languages) and adds 30 questions on disabilities, inclusive and special education, plus 30 on assistive technology and support skills. [4]

Next: Read the RPwD Act 2016 basics.
