The one-line route: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English → NEET (UG) → MBBS with a 12-month internship → NEET-PG → 3-year M.D. / DNB in General Medicine or Paediatrics → NEET-SS → 3-year D.M. / DrNB Neurology. NMC also lists a 6-year D.M. Neurology course. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
A neurologist is a super-specialist doctor for diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles — stroke, epilepsy, headache, Parkinson's disease and more. In India the qualification is the D.M. (Neurology) or DrNB Neurology. [4] [5]
| Level | Pay (official) |
|---|---|
| Specialist Grade III Assistant Professor (Neurology), UPSC Advt 07/2026 | Pay Level 11 plus non-practising allowance [6] |
| Government doctor after MBBS (UPSC CMS 2026) | Pay Level 10 · ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500 plus NPA [7] |
The UPSC advert prints the pay level, not a rupee figure. PG and DM residents get stipends set by their college; private-practice income is not officially published.
NEET-SS is the single entrance for every DM / MCh / DrNB seat, including private and deemed colleges; no state or college may hold its own super-speciality entrance. [4] [8]
D.M. / DrNB Neurology takes an M.D. / DNB in General Medicine or Paediatrics as the prior degree. Paediatrics also leads to D.M. Paediatric Neurology. [4] [5]
NMC's PG regulations list D.M. (Neurology) and M.Ch. (Neurosurgery) as the two 6-year super-speciality courses. [5]
These institutes are outside NEET-SS counselling for DM / MCh seats. [4]
MBBS, MD and DM tuition fees differ by state and college, so they are not printed here.

NMC's PG regulations list D.M. (Neurology) among the two 6-year super-speciality courses (the other is M.Ch. Neurosurgery). The usual road is still MBBS → M.D. → NEET-SS → 3-year D.M. [5]
Next: Check which institutes offer the 6-year course in the year you finish MBBS.
