How to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life·15 student doubts answered ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Class 12 Science with PCB (50%) → appear in NEET (UG) → BMLS: 4 years including a 1-year internship, under the NCAHP curriculum → Medical Laboratory Technologist; BMLS + experience or MMLS → Laboratory Scientist. A Class 12 Science + DMLT route leads to posts such as Railway Lab Assistant. [1] [2]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

00 The job

What the work really is

Medical laboratory technologists test blood, urine, tissue and other samples so that doctors can diagnose disease. Under the NCAHP Act 2021, medical laboratory science is a regulated allied and healthcare profession with a national competency-based curriculum. [1]

A normal working day

  • Collect and process samples, and run tests on analysers.
  • Do microscopy, biochemistry, microbiology and blood-bank work.
  • Run quality checks and report results accurately.

Main routes

BMLS (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science)

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (at least 50%); admission on the basis of having appeared for NEET; 4 years including a 1-year compulsory internship. [1]

Diploma (DMLT) → Lab Assistant

Railway Lab Assistant Grade II needs Class 12 Science plus a DMLT, or a full-time certificate of at least one year at par with it. [2]

MMLS and Laboratory Scientist

A 2-year master's including six months of research dissertation; NCAHP's career map puts Laboratory Scientists at BMLS + 5 years' experience or MMLS with 50%. [1]

Time and cost

BMLS
4 years including 1 year of internship [1]
MMLS
2 years including 6 months of research dissertation [1]
NEET (UG) fee (India centre)
₹1,700 General · ₹1,600 EWS / OBC-NCL · ₹1,000 SC / ST / PwBD / third gender [3]

College fees differ by state and college, so they are not printed here.

Hidden challenges

  • Central Railway posts are few: CEN 03/2025 had 12 Lab Assistant Grade II posts out of 434 paramedical posts. [2]
  • NCAHP did not propose a revised curriculum for the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science — the national curriculum covers the BMLS and MMLS. [1]
  • Internship stipends are left to each university or institution; NCAHP only recommends a reasonable amount. [1]

Who should not choose it

  • You dislike handling blood and body samples.
  • You are careless with labels and records — one mix-up can harm a patient.
  • You want constant patient contact — most work is inside the lab.
01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do at each stage — and the doubts on the way

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

    Biology and Chemistry

    • BMLS needs Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology — at least 50% — so build Science early. [1]

Doubt What does a medical laboratory technologist do?

They test blood, urine, tissue and other samples so that doctors can diagnose disease. The NCAHP Act 2021 regulates the profession, and NCAHP has a national competency-based curriculum for it. [1]

Next: Read the Routes list above.

Doubt Is lab technology regulated in India?

Yes. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act was notified on 28 March 2021; it regulates education and services and keeps a Central Register and State Registers of allied and healthcare professionals. [1]

Next: Choose colleges that follow the NCAHP curriculum.

  2. You are here Class 10

    Choose PCB

    • Take Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 11 — both BMLS and DMLT-based posts need Class 12 Science. [1] [2]

Stream / subjects: Science with Biology (PCB).

Doubt Can I do lab technology after Class 10?

For the Railway Lab Assistant post, no: it needs Class 12 Science plus a DMLT. BMLS also needs Class 12 Science with PCB. [2] [1]

Next: Finish Class 12 Science first.

  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

    Class 12 PCB and NEET

    • BMLS admission is on the basis of having appeared for NEET (UG), with at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12. [1]

    Exams that open here

    • NEET (UG) 2026 — 3 May 2026 (re-exam 21 June 2026) [3] [4]

    Money help at this stage

    Lower NEET (UG) fee

Doubt Do I need NEET for BMLS?

NCAHP's curriculum says admission should be on the basis of the candidate having appeared for NEET (UG), along with Class 12 PCB at 50% or more. [1]

Next: Register for NEET even if MBBS is not your goal; check your state's admission rules too.

Doubt What marks do I need in Class 12 for BMLS?

At least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognised board. [1]

Next: Keep your PCB marks above 50%.

Doubt My board did not have English. Is that a problem?

NCAHP encourages such students to take English as an elective through Swayam or similar platforms; it does not add university credit. [1]

Next: Take an online English course before or during BMLS.

  4. You are here In college

    BMLS and internship

    • BMLS lasts 4 years including a 1-year compulsory internship (laboratory rotation or research dissertation). [1]

    Doubt How long is BMLS?

Four years, including one year of compulsory internship in laboratory rotation or a research dissertation. [1]

    Next: Plan for four years.

    Doubt Are BMLS interns paid?

NCAHP's task force strongly recommends a stipend during the internship but leaves the amount to each university or institution. [1]

Next: Ask your college about its internship stipend before joining.

Doubt Is there an exit or licence exam for lab professionals?

Not yet in force. NCAHP's curriculum says an exit exam by an agency identified by the Commission can be held and may evolve into a licensure exam for all allied and healthcare professionals. [1]

Next: Watch NCAHP notices in your final year.

  5. You are here Graduated

    Jobs and the master's

    • An MMLS takes 2 years including six months of research dissertation. [1]

Doubt What is the career ladder in medical labs?

NCAHP's map: Medical Laboratory Technologist with a BMLS; Laboratory Scientist with BMLS + 5 years' clinical experience or an MMLS with 50%; senior posts with more experience. Old diplomas (before 2021) map to the Associate level. [1]

Next: Plan an MMLS or build experience to move up.

Doubt What does a Medical Laboratory Scientist do differently?

NCAHP describes scientists working closely with physicians: running specialised assays, relaying results to doctors, setting up quality-assurance programmes, supervising associates and technologists, and training staff. [1]

Next: Aim for an MMLS if this work appeals to you.

Doubt Can a DMLT holder get a Railway job?

Yes. RRB's Lab Assistant Grade II needs Class 12 Science plus a DMLT, or a full-time certificate of at least one year at par with the DMLT; age 18–33; Pay Level 3. [2]

Next: Watch for the next RRB paramedical notice.

Doubt How many Railway lab posts were notified recently?

CEN 03/2025 (paramedical) had 12 Lab Assistant Grade II posts at Pay Level 3 (₹21,700) out of 434 paramedical posts across RRBs. [2]

Next: Apply to every relevant notice — posts are few.

  6. You are here Working / switching career

    Diploma holders already working

    • NCAHP's career map lets a Diploma in MLS (2 years + 6 months' internship, obtained between 2015 and 2021) with 5 years' clinical experience reach the Technologist level. [1]

Doubt I have an old DMLT. Can I move up?

NCAHP's career map recognises a Diploma in MLS obtained between 2015 and 2021 plus 5 years' clinical experience at the Technologist level; a BMLS remains the main entry route. [1]

Next: Consider a BMLS if your diploma is newer.

Doubt Is the Railway Lab Assistant exam negatively marked?

Yes. In RRB CEN 03/2025, one-third of a mark is cut for each wrong answer in the computer-based test, and marks are normalised across shifts. [2]

    Next: Practise with timed tests.
