How to become a physiotherapist — every doubt, class by class
The one-line route: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English (50% in PCB) → your state's BPT admission (merit list or entrance test) → Bachelor of Physiotherapy: 4 years + 1-year internship under the NCAHP curriculum → registration under the NCAHP Act → hospital, sports, clinic or MPT. [1] [2]
The road, with every doubt in its place
Each stage says what to do, which exams open and the doubts students ask at that point. You can stop at your own class — or read ahead.
-
Class 8 · Class 9
Biology, fitness and helping people
- BPT needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology later, with 50% marks. Learn the human body chapters well. [1]
- Play a sport or watch a physiotherapist at a hospital or sports academy to see the work up close.
Doubt Is a physiotherapist a doctor?
No. A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional under the NCAHP Act, 2021, with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. Physiotherapists treat with exercise and hands-on therapy rather than medicines or surgery. [1]
Next: Read the Routes list above to see where physiotherapists work.
Doubt Do I need NEET for BPT?
It depends on your state. NCAHP's 2025 curriculum says candidates must have appeared in NEET and that merit is based on Class 12 marks. In 2026, Uttar Pradesh filled seats on Class 12 PCB marks, Karnataka on PU marks and West Bengal through its own JENPAS test. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Next: Sit NEET to stay safe, and follow your state's own bulletin.
-
Class 10
Choose Science with Biology
Stream / subjects: PCB with English.
Common mistakes
- Taking PCM without Biology — BPT needs Biology.
Doubt Can I do BPT with PCM?
No. BPT needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In Uttar Pradesh, PCM students can join only Optometry and Audiology among the allied courses. [1] [2]
Next: Choose PCB for Class 11.
Doubt Can I study physiotherapy after Class 10?
Not the BPT degree — it needs Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. [1]
Next: Pick PCB in Class 11.
-
Class 11 · Class 12
Class 12 marks decide most BPT seats
- Score at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (40% for SC / ST / OBC in UP and West Bengal) and pass English. [1] [2] [4]
- You must be 17 by the date your state sets (31 December 2026 in Uttar Pradesh). [1] [2]
- Watch your state's allied-health admission notice in your Class 12 year — UP's 2026 registration closed on 5 June. [2]
Exams that open here
- UP Common Allied & Healthcare Admission (CAHET) — Online registration 2 May – 5 June 2026 · merit on Class 12 PCB marks [2]
- WB JENPAS(UG) — Exam 7 June 2026 [4]
Common mistakes
- Ignoring Class 12 marks because 'there is no entrance test' — in merit-list states your PCB marks decide the seat.
- Missing the state's allied-health registration window while waiting for results.
Late? What now: Missed this year's merit list? Most states run it every year, so you can apply again next year with the same marks.
Doubt How many marks do I need for BPT?
NCAHP's curriculum asks for 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal accept 40% for SC, ST and OBC. [1] [2] [4]
Next: Keep your PCB total above the cut-off — it often decides your rank too.
Doubt Is there an entrance exam for BPT?
Some states have one, some do not. West Bengal uses JENPAS(UG); Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat admit on Class 12 marks. [4] [2] [3] [5]
Next: Find your state in the State rules block of your blueprint.
Doubt Can NIOS students join BPT?
Yes in some states. Uttar Pradesh's 2026 bulletin accepts NIOS and state open schools with science subjects and English, and NCAHP's curriculum also names the National Open School. [2] [1]
Next: Check your own state's bulletin.
Doubt Is there an upper age limit for BPT?
West Bengal's JENPAS(UG) 2026 sets no upper age limit for BPT. Uttar Pradesh sets only a minimum age of 17. [4] [2]
Next: Check your state's bulletin if you are older.
Doubt Do I need a domicile for government BPT colleges?
Often yes. Uttar Pradesh government colleges need a UP domicile certificate, or Class 10 and 12 both passed from UP. [2]
Next: Get your domicile certificate ready before counselling.
-
In college
In BPT: four years, then the internship
- Under NCAHP's 2025 curriculum: 4 years of study (annual pattern) and a 1-year full-time rotatory internship, taught in English. [1]
- Keep 75% attendance in theory and 85% in skills training — otherwise you cannot sit the final exam. [1]
Doubt How long is BPT?
Under NCAHP's 2025 curriculum, 4 years of study plus a 1-year internship. Before this it was 4½ years including internship, so older colleges may still list that. [1]
Next: Ask your college which pattern your batch follows.
Doubt Is BPT taught in Hindi or my state language?
NCAHP's curriculum makes English the medium of instruction and examination for all BPT subjects. [1]
Next: Work on your English reading in Class 11–12 if it is weak.
Doubt Can I take a break during BPT?
Be careful: NCAHP's curriculum does not re-admit students whose break is five years or more, or who have more than two spells of break. [1]
Next: Finish the course in one go if you can.

Graduated
Register, then specialise
- The NCAHP Act provides for a Central and State Register of allied and healthcare professionals; register before you practise. [1]
- For teaching posts, NCAHP's curriculum asks for at least 55% in MPT. [1]
Doubt Do physiotherapists need registration?
Yes. The NCAHP Act provides for a Central and State Register of allied and healthcare professionals, and NCAHP's curriculum speaks of physiotherapists registered to practise. [1]
Next: Watch your State Allied and Healthcare Council for registration notices.
Doubt What marks do I need in MPT to teach?
At least 55% in the MPT examinations is required for academic posts under NCAHP's curriculum. [1]
Next: Aim for 55% or more if you want to teach.
-
Working / switching career
Switching to physiotherapy later
- Where your state sets no upper age (West Bengal does not for BPT), you can start later with Class 12 PCB marks. [4]
