Golf — Step-by-Step Roadmap
The whole Golf journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Golf guide.
Zero to podium — the four stages
-
Stage 1 · Any age Grassroots & local entry
Learn at a golf club or range — rules, course care and conduct. No SAI NCOE or STC runs golf. [10]
-
Stage 2 · Amateur State to national breakthrough
State, national and international amateur events; the best go to the Nomura Cup and Queen Sirikit Cup. [8]
-
Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit
60 per gender from the Olympic Golf Ranking of 19 June 2028 (men) and 5 June 2028 (women); up to 4 per country if all are in the top 15, otherwise 2. [5]
Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [15][16]
Licence, ranking and anti-doping
- For LA28 you must appear on the Olympic Golf Ranking, be in good standing with your national federation and the IGF, and hold a licence or recognition from your national federation. [5]
- Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [9]
From the practice range to the world ranking
The golf ladder [8][6][5]

| 3. Asian Games | Amateur and pro golfers represent India — 2026 brought gold and team silver |
| 4. Professional tours | Ranking events earn world-ranking points |
| 5. LA28 | A place in the Olympic Golf Ranking by June 2028 |
Where golfers train
- Golf is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or SAI Training Centres; players train at golf clubs and academies. [10]
- The Tourism Ministry backs an Indian Golf Premier League plan to build golf-tourism infrastructure, including in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. [7]
Clubs, green fees, travel — and who pays
- Golf costs come from clubs (up to 14), balls, club membership or green fees, coaching and travel to ranking events. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [3]
Who pays — golf ladder [11]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Khelo India athlete | Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports | ₹6.28 lakh a year incl. ₹1.20 lakh cash |
| Olympic prospect | TOPS Core Group | ₹50,000 a month + approved training plan |
| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
Awards and sports-quota jobs
- Golf is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
- Medals at the Olympics or Asian Games can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions. [12]
