Equestrian — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) · Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Equestrian journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Equestrian guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Any age Grassroots & local entry

Learn to ride and care for a horse at a riding school or club; no SAI NCOE or STC runs equestrian. [10]

  2. Stage 2 · National State to national breakthrough

EFI shows and championships; police and service teams hold their own meets — e.g. the All India Police Equestrian Competition. [6][5]

  3. Stage 3 · Horse–rider pair FEI events abroad

Star-rated FEI competitions where the pair earns MER (minimum eligibility) results. [2][1][3]

  4. Stage 4 · Dressage 16+ · jumping/eventing 18+ International orbit

LA28 needs MER as the same horse–rider pair plus a quota place for India; Asian Games and FEI championships come first. [2][1][3][4]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [15][16]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

04 Every age group, child to masters

Equestrian at every age — rider 16 or 18 for LA28, horse 8 or 9

Equestrian sets ages for both partners: at LA28 the rider must be 16+ (dressage) or 18+ (jumping, eventing), and the horse 8+ or 9+. [1][2][3]

  1. 16+years
    Senior · open

    Dressage rider (LA28)

  3. 18–28years
    Job window

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [13][14][12]

05 Training centres & cities

Where riders train

  • Equestrian is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or SAI Training Centres. Riders train at clubs, riding schools and with police and service teams — the 43rd All India Police Equestrian Competition was held at the ITBP training centre in Bhanu, Panchkula. [10][6]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Horses are costly — who pays

  • Equestrian is one of the most expensive sports: a suitable horse, its feed, vet care, transport and FEI entries, plus riding kit. The horse must also qualify together with its rider. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. [1][2]

  • Equestrian is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST); polo is listed separately.
