Canoe & Kayak — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Canoe Federation (ICF) · Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Canoe & Kayak journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Canoe & Kayak guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Young · 13+ Grassroots & local entry

Learn to paddle at a club, your state association or a SAI centre; international age-group racing starts in the year you turn 13. [8][1]

  2. Stage 2 · 12–18 State to national breakthrough

Up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centre tests; STC extension centres also teach paddling. [8]

  3. Stage 3 · Scouted · to 23 National camp & elite trials

Residential NCOEs at Alappuzha, Jagatpur and Bhopal; Junior and U23 World Championships. [8][1]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

Sprint places from the 2026 and 2027 ACC Asian Championships, then the 2028 Asian qualifier; slalom via the Asian Olympic qualifier. Places go to the country, not the paddler. [3][4]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [15][16]
